Active-x validation error

When I try to run the WGA tool on the windows update site, I get an active-x
error, stating that the publisher of the active-x control cannot be verified.
Even after lowering the security level on IE to allow all active-x, I still
get a window advising that the control cannot be run. Tried the alternate
button, with the same result.

Does anyone have a cure for this?

The Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) validation check process
does not complete when you try to validate your copy of Windows XP
or Windows 2000 Professional

I had already tried everything suggested on the link you sent. None of that
was any help. The problem seems to stem from the fact that the publisher of
the active-x control is not recognized by windows. Should say Microsoft, but
says "unknown" in the prompt box.

FYI, this advice from Microsoft tech support fixed the problem I was having:

Step 1: Reset Internet Explorer settings
=======================================
Let us try clearing the temporary internet files on your computer as this
happen if the Windows Update site is using the old temporary files and also
enable the required ActiveX and Scripting setting in Internet Explorer.

1. Click Start -> Settings.
2. Click "Control Panel".
3. Double-click Internet Options.
4. Click "Delete Cookies" and select Yes to confirm.
5. Click "Delete Files" and select Yes to confirm.
6. Click Settings, click "View Objects" Delete all the objects in this
folder. If some objects cannot be deleted, please restart the computer and
try again.
7. Switch to the Security tab, select Internet and click "Default Level".
8. Click the "Custom Level" button.
9. Select "Enable" for all under the title "ActiveX controls and plug-ins".
10. Select "Enable" for all under the title "Scripting".
11. Click OK.
12. Switch to the Privacy tab, and click "Default" button.
13. Switch to the Advanced tab, click the "Restore Defaults" button and then
deselect the "Enable third-party browser extensions" option.
14. Click OK.

Step 2: Check the background programs
=====================================
NOTE: If you are running Ad-aware, ZoneAlarm, PC-Cillin, Norton Antivirus,
Norton Internet Security, Norton Personal Firewall, Sygate Personal Firewall,
Microsoft Personal Firewall, Proxomitron pop-up blocker, Ad Muncher or a web
accelerator, e.g. "Slipstream", I recommend you to temporarily disabl
e or shut down any of these before accessing the Windows Update site. Be
sure to enable them again when you complete the update process. If you can
access the Windows Update site with these applications disabled, then you may
need to add the Windows Update site to the applications exception, or the
do not block list. Please see the applications documentation on how to do
this.

You're recommending going on the Net without a firewall?

I don't really think that part is necessary. I believe the problem was
solved by this part:

1. Click Start -> Settings.
14. Click OK.

If it was necessary to disable Norton Firewall, one could always temporarily
disable it, and enable the windows firewall which should not interfere with
the update.
