I have a customer who whants to install yje Activesync 3.8 client program on
his Smallbusiness server 2003 SP1. He whants to Dial-in whith his PDA and
syncronize his pocket_pc file folder on the server. I have helped him to
setup this and he can syncronize by USB but not when he have connected by
PPTP VPN.

Any clues?

Hi,
First, this configuration is totally unsupported by Microsoft. They do not
support the installation of ActiveSync 3.x on the server. Second, if he has
SBS 2003 SP1 and he has Exchange installed, he should be able to sync
directly to the server if the server's website is public and SSL support is
allowed.

So if he wants to sync via PPTP and the network, he needs to setup the
network connect in ActiveSync - File - Connection Settings. Then in the
network connection for the PPTP, the user needs to enter the private IP
address of the SBS server as the WINS server for the connection. Then you
should be able to use a utility like vxutil from www.cam.com to ping the SBS
server by name (without periods).

Hello again and thanks for the quick answer. Does the Exchange server support
transferring files to a PDA? I thought i only could sync adressbok, mail and
calender with Exchange? I have tried to connect thru PPTP with the SBS server
as WINS and active sync connects and tries to sync but after a few seconds
the sync sessions stops. If i disable all the items to be syncronised it
connects, syncs and disconnects as its suppose to but when i mark the
syncronise Files item it stoppes after connecting to Activesync client. I
have also tried to only syncronise the adressbook but the same things happens
with that. It seems that activesync is not "allowed" to access any files in
SBS 2003. Could that be the case?

Hi,
Exchange does not support file synchronization. However if you have the
PPTP connection open you can access the network share directly if you wanted
to using File Explorer on the Pocket PC.

As for ActiveSync on the SBS 2003 server, it should work. However the
security on the folder for the synchronized files could be a problem too.
The user that is logged into the server should be a local administrator on
the server.

Hello
Thank you again for all your help. I have now managed to connect to the
server with activesync 3.8 and start syncing by my PPTP connection. I see my
real
partnership name when activesync is connecting then it imidiantly switches
to Guest partnership. When i look at the log file it seems to be something
wrong with my PDA finding the activesync program? Here is my log file.

Hello again.
I have now managed to connect to the server thru PPTP and i see my
partnership name for a second when activesync starts but then i switches to
Guest partnership and stops. I have looked in the log files and it seems to
me that there is something wrong with the network connection between the PDA
and activesync thru PPTP.
Her is my log file.

The protocol for that version requires incoming and outgoing TCP
connections. It looks like the TCP connection can't be established from the
PC to the device. Is the device addressable from the PC? Have you tried to
remote sync on your LAN?
