ActiveSync 4.0 + WM5.0 with Dell Axim X51v - Outlook Express cannot be used?

Hi Chris and list,

I recently received my Dell Axim X51v. Due to receiving the dreaded
"85010014" error message, I eventually had to uninstall Outlook 2002 and
ActiveSync 4.0 then I simply let the Dell CD install both Outlook 2002 and
ActiveSync 4.0 and now everything seems to be fine.

Previously, I was using a HP iPAQ 3970 upgraded to WM 2003. Over the years,
I have used Outlook Express for all of my emails as I did not have a need to
move over to Outlook. I only used Outlook for synch'ing Contacts, Calendar
etc. to my iPAQ.

My recent experience with the Dell Axim X51v and ActiveSync 4.0 seems to
indicate that ActiveSync 4.0 forces you to use only Outlook for emails
otherwise you get an error message "Either there is no default mail client
or the current mail client cannot fulfil the messaging request. Please run
Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client". It took me a long
time to move over all of my emails and address book info to Outlook and to
set it all up the way I like. Unfortunately, I had to do it all again when I
got the 85010014 error.

Since I have developed a vertical market Pocket PC software package for
consumers, not corporate users, can I now assume that all of my customers
now need to use Outlook for email instead of Outlook Express? I am just
checking that this a true statement. I have found that a lot of my customers
continue to use Outlook Express so it is going to be a big thing to move
over to Outlook. I am trying to judge the impact on my customers.

Regards,
Neville Lang

Chris,

BTW, your paper on ActiveSync 4.0 Troubleshooting Guide was very helpful. I
also use the Sygate Personal Firewall Pro so the link to the changes to my
firewall was useful.

Hi,
To sync with Outlook Express take a look at www.syncdata.it. They have a
sync solution for Outlook Express which uses ActiveSync.

Chris,

Just letting you know that SyncData advised me that their program
SyncExpress does not yet work on WM5.0 / AS4.0 but they will release a
version update soon by the end November to mid December. I thought you might
be interested.

I just wanted to confirm again with you that ActiveSync 4.0 will definitely
not now work with Outlook Express. If this is true then I will need to
advise all of our consumer customers who are using Outlook Express (I assume
there are many of them) to either move their email to Outlook or to purchase
SyncExpress when it becomes available. I fear this might become an issue for
many Pocket PC software distributors with similar consumer customers (not
corporate) who currently use Outlook Express and decide to purchase these
new devices with WM5.0/AS4.0.

Regards,
Neville Lang

Hi,
I suspecte that may be the case. Thanks for letting me know. I am positive
that ActiveSync 4.0 does not support Outlook Express. ActiveSync has never
supported Outlook Express. However users can easily upgrade from Outlook
Express to Outlook by converting their data.
