ActiveSync 4.1 USB Issues

Hi

I recent upgrade Microsoft Activesync from 3.8 to 4.1, but can only
syncronise via the serial port of my HP Ipaq 3850 Cradle. The USB connection
worked to set up the partnership, but any future connections /
syncronisations do not regester. The Ipaq states that it attempts
"connecting to host" but no recongition is regsitered. The OS in the Ipac is
Windows CE 4.20 (ROM 3.00.06) with my PC being Windows XP SP2.

The following website http://www.bevhoward.com/ASync.htm states that
[If you have devices running 2003se or earlier ppc os' you should NOT
upgrade activesync to version 4.1!!!Version 4 drops a number of features
available in 3.x versions (such as the ability to sync via wifi) and uses
none of the new connectivity methods to connect non WM5 devices.]
Is Microsoft Activesync 4.1 compatible with this Pocket PC as it is not a
Windows Mobile 5 device?

I looked at Microsoft's website about USB problems
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...c/default.mspx, which
stated that there are issues particularly with Software Firewalls. I do not
have a "software firewall" as I run a Linksys WAG54G.
Is there something I missed?

When I decided to uninstall Microsoft Activesync 4.1 back to Microsoft
Activesync 3.8 the install completely stalled and would not continue. Noting
the install program was in Task Manager, but would not continue. I disable
all virus / spyware software but this did not solve the problem. I also
noted on the above mentioned website http://www.bevhoward.com/ASync.htm
[you install 4.x over 3.x, you cannot revert to 3.x without manually
deleting dll files and making registry modifications...].
Am I not completly uninstalling Microsoft Activesync 4.1 which stops the
re-install of Microsoft Activesync 3.8.

My overall desire is to have the best Microsoft Activesync for my HP Ipaq
3850 syncronsing with my PC Windows XP SP2 via USB.

Any thoughts?
Cheers

Best case is to move back to 3.8 - you can find manual removal
instructions at
http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/wce/activesync3.1remove.htm. Also, what
error message (if any) are you getting on uninstalling ActiveSync 4.1?

4.1 will work with the 3850, but the best thing (since you are not
using a WM5 device) is to revert back to 3.8.

Mind you ActiveSync 4.1 is working fine, I just do not have USB connectivity
after the very first syncronisation.

I am not getting any error messages when I uninstall ActiveSync 4.1, the
operation runs smoothly. The problem is when I then try to re-install
ActiveSync 3.8, the install hangs with program remaining in Task Manager.

Is there any special way to uninstall ActiveSync 4.1? I would be happy to
re-install ActiveSync 3.8 but the installation hangs / fails with no error
noted.

Mind you ActiveSync 4.1 is working fine, I just do not have USB connectivity
after the very first syncronisation. I checked Device Manager when the USB
is connected and the PC finds the device but AvticeSync does not see it.

Where is it hanging? Before you get to the file copying, or at a
specific point during the install?

I have now successfully installed ActiveSync 3.8. The installation copied
all the installation files to my temp directory but then hanged. So I then
deleted the processes in Task Manager and found the "setup" file in my temp
directory. After executing setup ActiveSync 3.8 installed successfully.

Although I still had USB connectivity. The PC detects the device in
device manager once the iPaq is connected (Windows CE Devices - Compaq iPaq
USB Sync), but once I engage ActiveSync the device cannot be detected. I
also note then receive an error in device manager (Code 43 - stating that
"drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the
device failed in some manner").

I searched the web suggesting to Hard Reset the Ipaq and then restart the
syncroniation / partnership. Upon that step, all appears to be working now
and syncronising perfectly.
