Yes, until upgrading to the 4.2 beta, I was running in that configuration,
two PCs running XPSP2 and fully updated, syncing with an iMate KJam running the latest WM5 updates. I had some initial problems with syncing Notes and AS not being able to resolve changes, but that seems to be cleared up with 4.2 beta. What are you seeing as far as problems? No, they're not joking about removing wireless sync for security reasons. It's not Bill that we've heard that from but the guys on the AS team. Paul T. Hi Paul:
I tried to install 4.2 Beta version in one of the two PC's, but the result is exactly the same. And yesterday night when I tried to sync with home PC (activesync 4.1) I was really surprised to discover my PDA was recognized as a new PDA connection and ask me to delete the mobile device saved inside activesync because had the same name (of course... the PDA didn't change the name). I'll copy-paste a text sended to Microsoft AS Team which explains, more or less, the problem. This is the text : Hi : I recently bought a new Dell Axim X51V PDA. I was a 'more or less' happy user of Dell Axim X5, windows mobile 2002 & activesync 3.8, which few times had some USB problems to synch, but normally worked OK. Now, with the new PDA, I feel like a Beta tester, using a 'beta' version of Windows Mobile 2005 with a beta Activesync 4.1 (or 4.2). I see miles of mails in different world forums, too many people asking why are so many problems to sync through USB, and why Microsoft decided to forget about synch through Wireless wifi, a very fast and confortable method used for so many users. Why Microsoft deleted the Schedule button just for Windows Mobile 2005 (it was very useful with Windows Mobile 2002). My panorama : Two PC's (home and work) equipped with Windows XP, SP2 and the last updates, Activesync 4.1 or 4.2 Beta, correct setup for firewall and antivirus, ethernet services like share deleted. Home PC -> impossible to sync through USB. I usually did through wireless with my old Dell Axim X5... but now I can not because I have activesync 4.1 and can not use older versions because they don't work with Windows Mobile 2005... Microsoft just inform you about 'no wireless possible' in few lines losted inside some big web page... So I had to buy a bluetooth-usb adapter. Now I can sync my new Dell Axim X51V through Bluetooth-usb adapter. (no wireless wifi, no USB dock station). Work PC -> I use USB dockstation to sync. No problem with my old Dell Axim X5, but very difficult with Dell Axim X51V. One of every 25 tries (or more) will work. The other 24 tries it will be impossible to sync, with different results. I send you some Ethereal sniffers from USB-Ethernet done while trying to sync Dell Axim X51v PDA with work PC, wishing you'll find why it doesn't work and solve all the problems in version 4.3 as soon as possible. Please contact me if you need these files in a different format. Sended Files : 01.cap - Activesync does 'Connecting-Connected-Looking for changes-Synchronizing' but stops at half done, showing disconnected. 02.cap - Activesync does connecting and after a long time shows error 'Critical communications... try reseting PDA...' 03.cap - Activesync does connecting and after a long time shows error 'Critical communications... try reseting PDA...' 04.cap - ActiveSync does Connecting-Connected-Looking for changes and 20 minuts later the message will be 'Looking for changes' so we'll stop. 05.cap - Activesync does 'Connecting-Connected-Looking for changes-Synchronizing' but stops at half done, showing disconnected. 06.cap - Activesync does 'Connecting-Connected-Looking for changes-Synchronizing' and finally Connected (so information has updated). The connection will die in aprox. 2 minutes anyway. 07.cap - ActiveSync does Connecting-Connected-Looking for changes and 20 minuts later the message will be 'Looking for changes' so we'll stop. 08.cap - ActiveSync will be 'Connecting' for evermore after entering password, but really is doing nothing. 09.cap - ActiveSync takes a long time in 'Connecting' and finally shows error 'Sync can not be completed succesfully. 10.cap - Activesync does 'Connecting-Connected-Looking for changes-Synchronizing' and finally Connected (so information has updated). The connection will die in aprox. 2 minutes anyway. Just once a week Activesync does 'Connecting-Connected-Looking for changes-Synchronizing-Connected' and finnally mantains the connection for hours and hours allowing to explore files and install new software. All the other times it's impossible to install nothing because you'll loose the connection while... Please, I understand I'm not alone with all this problems, miles of users are having similar problems because of inestabilities of Activesync, I wish your programmers and designers will be serious and your responsability will make you solve all this urgently. I'd run your tests with the AS4.2 beta on both ends, for consistency. Try
plugging the device directly into the root USB hub on both machines and try using the cable that came with the new device and maybe one other cable, if you have more than one. We've heard of problems with trying to plug the device into anything else and, of course, cable problems can cause the sort of intermittent problem that you're seeing at work. I'm guessing that you're using different cables at work and home but, if not, try a known-good cable or at least the new cable that came with the device. You should also specify what firewall and what antivirus, and version numbers, you're using. Several antivirus products are very resistant to letting AS work, blocking scripts, scanning network traffic for viruses, etc. If you can uninstall the anti-virus completely as a test, that's a good idea. If you're using a firewall other than Microsoft, that's another possible breaking point. Paul T. Hi Paul:
Thanks for your kind answer... I just have one USB dockstation, but I'm really sure it's not a hardware problem. It must be a software problem. I'll explain : The same USB dockstation worked OK in a Notebook where I used the PDA as a GUEST, just to load some photos and music. I sended large amounts of data repeatly with no problems. In one of both computers I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall, I'm really sure it's well configurated, but anyway I tried once to by pass the firewall with exactly the same problem. About the antivirus... in the same computer I'm using AVG, I tried tio bypass it too and didn't work. With the other computer the sync works once every 25 tries... so it really sometimes work... so it's not a hardware problem, it's just unestabilities and software bugs (i've seen sometime message errors closing software in Windows and in Pocket PC). When I see so many people (thousands) with problems with Activesync 4.X and Windows Mobile 2005, the same people were working before with previous versions, and they use different models of PDA, Mobile Telephones.... THEN I'm really sure something it's not working OK with Microsoft Software and must be resolved urgently. Just take a look with Google, words : 'Activesync 4.1 USB' and prepare to read forums. My Last sync: 09/05/2006... since then I have connected and disconnected more than 40 times and 40 different results... best regards, Paco Plus "Paul G. I'm glad that you're sure that the unnamed versions of Sygate and AVG are
configured correctly, but please understand that you being sure does not make it so. There certainly have been hundreds of people report problems with AS, but there are *not* thousands of *open* reports. Most problems have been solved by a combination of upgrading to 4.1 or 4.2beta, and following the recommendations here or in the troubleshooting guides. If you're unwilling to help fix your problem, then, I'm sorry, but you're destined to be unhelpable... Paul T.
