ActiveSync 4.2 install wizard won't run

When I try to install on both my desktop and laptop, I get an error: "The
wizard was interrupted before Microsoft ActiveSync 4.2 could be completely
installed. Your system has not been modified. To complete installation at a
another time, please run setup again."

Of course, when I run setup again I get the same error. I have tried
disabling, then uninstalling my virus scanner (AVG free) my firewall
(ZoneAlarm free) and my internet filter (Bsafe) on my laptop but it didn't
help. I made sure that TEMP and TMP were pointing to valid directories and
tried running setup from the command line on my desktop, but that didn't help
either. I performed a "clean boot" on my desktop (per the MS KB article) and
that didn't help.

My PPC is mostly useless without ActiveSync and I'm getting quite
frustrated. Anybody have any other ideas?

Best regards,
Ed

Hi,
Were you logged in as the Administrator on the PC? Did you make sure that
the Pocket PC is not plugged in while you install ActiveSync?

Hello Chris,

Both my desktop and my laptop have only one user account each, and as far as
I can tell there is no way for them *not* to have admin access since they are
the only ones. Is that correct? Or is there some way to log into an actual
"Administrator" account that I'm unaware of? I have successfully installed
all my other software, drivers, games, etc, from these accounts.

I'm pretty sure I tried it both with the PPC connected and without.

Thanks for your replies...

Best regards,
Ed

Hi,
There actually is an Administrator account as well as the user accounts.
However if you are part of the Administrators group that will work fine.

Beyond that are you current on your Windows updates and service packs?
ActiveSync 4.2 requires Windows 2000 SP4 and XP SP2.

Ok, I found the answer in the FAQ you have linked in your sig. It was the
mapi32.dll issue and I fixed it with fixmapi.exe. ActiveSync installed
without a hitch after that...

....and proceeded to crash my computer everytime I connected my PPC! ARG!
Oh well, I have made progress for tonight but now it's time for bed. I will
troubleshoot the crashing issue tomorrow and, if needed, create a new thread
about it.

Thanks again for your help!

Best regards,
Ed
