Hi,

I have the problem that after establishing the connection between my
WM5.0 device over USB ActiveSync 4.1 gets stuck at "Retrieving Settings".

I have no personal firewall installed and my WinXP SP2 firewall is disabled.

Any ideas?

I can ping the device so the IP connection works...

I have exactly the same problem on a first time connect. I have disabled
Sygate and checked Windows Firewall. It is infuriating.

Anyone any ideas???

That does sound like the firewall. You might try actually *removing*
Sygate, as I have no idea what "disable" might do (they might decide that
disable means don't allow any incoming traffic from new devices).

You can also verify that you're plugging the AS cable directly into the PC's
USB port and not a hub, that you've tried a couple of cables, if you have
them, etc., but I'm betting on the packets being blocked.

Hi Paul,

I've set Sygate to "allow all". What does packets being blocked mean?

Paul:

I started with this thread, which put onto a possible issue with the SyGate
firewall. I then followed the manufacturer suggestion and went to the Windows
Mobile ActiveSync4 site (www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/activesync4). There
I found a help page for configuring the SyGate firewall
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobi...nc/sygate.mspx). I
implemented the settings as described. I also selected 'Record this traffic
in "Packet Log"'. I saw a massive amount of back & forth traffic in the
packet log, all allowed, but my Pocket PC device still sticks on "Retrieving
Settings". Can you think of anything else to try?

I discovered something this morning when I examined the Sygate security log.
Even though the advanced rules are set to allow all 4 ActiveSync programs to
run, Sygate logged the following "Application Hijacking has been detected
The application: C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\wcescomm.exe try to
launch another application: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
ActiveSync\WCESMgr.exe". I'm going to contact Sygate and see what they have
to offer.

Yes, that must be allowed in order for AS to work.
