Activesync & app installs

Hi All,

Is there anyone who knows what role Activesync has during the install of
an app (other than as a data pipe) ?

I have downloaded a demo version of some software for Pocket Windows
2003 which is delivered as an executable that runs on the host PC. It's
a self-extracting archive that's supposed to install the Pocket PC app
through Activesync but after extraction I can see a dialog blink in &
out of existence in an instant. The self extractor then cleans up &
closes, failing to install the app.

The supplier of the software insists that it's been installed on my
hardware by others with no problems.

I've tried it on two different host PC's with the same result in each
case. Activesync is v3.7.1.

Any comments appreciated.

Chris.

Hello Chris,

Are you using a firewall s/w? If yes, take a look at the possible cause ---

Hi Raj,

Thanks for the advice. I'm only using the standard WinXP SP2 firewall,
but it's obviously still a possibility. I will check into it.

It's funny now that I think about it that the two PC's I tried it on are
both XP SP2!

Chris.

Hi (again) Raj,

Well I just tried disabling the firewall with no success. It behaves exactly
as described above.

I'm thinking I'll try it next on a win2k machine and/or an earlier version of
activesync. Is this a sensible approach?

Chris.

Hi Chris,

Well it is an option you have. However, the earlier versions of ActiveSync
are not compatible with PPC 2003. So you will need 3.7.1. Have you tried
installing other PPC apps... see if they install correctly on the PPC. That
way you will be able to tell if the cause is the s/w app. itself or the
computer.

Good luck !!

it might be that the cab that you are trying to install is not intended for
the device you connected.
To troublshoot, try the following:
Once you install the app, verify that it did install to the desktop:
Does create a folder on the desktop?
Most apps will have .cab files sitting in the folder they create: usually
c:\program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\App Name or c:\program Files\app Name
Now you can copy that cab file over to your device and verify that it
installes correctly (to install the cab once it is on the device, tap on the
file in the device explorer)

Another issue might be that you don't have admin privilege on the desktop
and the app fails to install.

The problem is it doesn;t get this far. I've only recently got the
PocketPC so I'm not that familiar with it's quirks (been using PCs since
DOS 3.0).

Which desktop? Actually in any case PC or PPC no folders are created.
When I run the installer a WinZIP self-extractor pops up showing files
being extracted. After this a dialog is displayed - it's the Add/Remove
Programs dialog. I can only get to see it if ActiveSync is not
connected. If ActiceSync is connected that dialog flashes up &
disappears instantly.

I can open the install file with WinRAR and see the contents. There are
quite a few cab files in there: one called 'commonfiles' and then one
each for ARM, MIPS & SH3 processors.

So I assume you mean for me to copy the relevant processor CAB +
commonfiles.CAB to the PPC manually and see if they extract?

I defintiely do have admin privilege (on the host PC! I assume there's
no admin/user distinction on the PPC?)

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try.

Hi Raj,

OK, thanks for clearing that up. The only other apps I've installed
we're done by coping the install file to the PPC first and running it
there i.e they were native to the PPC. I tried it in this case and it's
not recognised as a valid executable by the PPC so it's obviously a PC
application. The supplier's intructions also reflect this.

Thanks for your advice in any case.

Chris.

I did the above and it worked!

Many thanks for your suggestion! I'll inform the supplier and suggest
there may be a problem with their install.

Chris.
