ActiveSync and Exchange Server

Yesterday, I added a server to ActiveSync so that I can now sync up my
coporate e-mail, Tasks and Calendar over the air. That works just fine.
However.....

Now, when I plug in my Treo 750 to the cradle, it goes ahead and syncs up
the other items (Contacts, Files, Notes, Favorites) with my laptop (also
connected to the server through Outlook 2007), and then keeps trying to sync
up with the Exchange Server until it fails. It does no damage, but it does
cause the 750 to whine that it can't connect using the current network
connection and gives me the little red exclamation point on the ActiveSync
icon in the system tray. The error code reported by ActiveSync is 85002003.

So, have I done something wrong in setting up the Exchange Server sync, or
can someone clue me in on a way to keep ActiveSync from trying to sync up
that server when plugged into the USB port? I've tried changing my
connection from Automatic to Internet and Work, but still get the same issue.

I posted a very similar message yesterday.
I spoke with our exchange team at work and they said the server is
validating whether the device is Windows Mobile 5 and if not it disallows
the connection. I wonder if they really mean any Windows Mobile of a high
enough level as WM6 is getting to be fairly common.

So what I believe is that the device can connect on it's own but when
tethered it is the PC trying to make the connection which does not have an
allowed OS and fails.
For the most part this is a nuisance. For me it gets a little worse because
I want to plug into the PC and let it charge as well as sync and if I leave
it plugged in for an extended period it hangs up the device (an 8525) by
either causing it to become unresponsive when I go to use it or occasionally
causing the radio to fail so it will not make any data connections until
reset.
And you cannot have different sync settings on the PC than on the phone.

You might try setting your exchange server to only sync manually for the
mobile setting. It should still sync up via your PC since you said it is
connected to your exchange server. But if you want to sync up when not
tethered you would have to kick it off manually.
Maybe someone could come up with a utility to kick off wireless sync at
scheduled times while leaving the sync settings set to manual and we would
have a solution.

Well, we seem to have the same issues. I'm mobile more than I'm tethered, so
having the e-mails pushed out when they arrive is a priority; I wouldn't want
to change that to sync manually. I've seen a lot of posts about this around
the net, so we're not the only one's with this issue. I can talk to our
Exchange team to see if they can open things up to allow the connection
without returning an error, but I'd like to hear from someone on the
Microsoft side about whether there might be another solution from the user
side or if there's enough of this issue to warrant some additional mods to
ActiveSync in the near future.

I have just read some other posts on the web talking about this issue and
they say they have resolved it by going into their ActiveSync connection
settings and change the "This PC is connected to:" option to Internet or
Work rather than the setting of Automatic and that cleared it up.
I cannot test this until I get home tonight but if you can test earlier post
back your results.

Correct, the error code 0x85002003 means that the device timed out waiting
to establish a connection to the server. You may want to test basic internet
connectivity with IE on the device.

As expected, I have no IE connectivity either when plugged into the cradle.
I've tried changing ActiveSync's connection to both Internet and Work from
Automatic to no avail. Could this be a port being blocked? We don't use
Windows Firewall on the work laptops, so I can only assume that anything
being blocked would be as a result of a Policy or Registry setting. The only
other thing going on here is that I'm connected to our office network through
Cisco's WebVPN client; would I need to flag my Work connection as conecting
to the internet and enter something in the proxy server field?

Depends on the topology of the PC network.

If you are connecting through a proxy, you can set the PC's ActiveSync to
"work", and then manually configure the devices HTTP proxy.

VPN's can be tricky since they typically can modify the routing table. You
may want to try switching the devices USB technology from RNDIS to serial
(USB to PC setting) or try Bluetooth.

If you are very technological, you can install something like "ethereal" and
watch what the TCP packets are doing.
