Activesync and multiple users

I have started using Activesync to synchronize a new Windows Smartphone 2003
with Outlook. All in all it works well BUT:

I also run my PC "safely". That is I do all my regular work in a restricted
user, and work as a privileged user only when I need to, mainly to install
and update software.

Activesync handles two simultaneous users badly. In fact, it breaks
Outlook. I can’t see what is happening, but it’s a hard fault. A real pain.

So my question is how to arrange things so that Activesync only runs in one
user, since I never want to synchronize in the privileged user?

I can find nothing in the documentation or KB that mentions multiple users,
preventing Activesync running in a user etc.

Hi,
ActiveSync requires the user to be a local administrator to sync. This is
because ActiveSync writes to the registry. Further ActiveSync 3.x requires
that all devices for all users be unique. Also, there is no support for
simultaneous synchronization of multiple devices. Be careful if you use
ActiveSync 3.x, it will sync with each user's PST if they are logged in even
if it's not the correct profile.

Thank you for the reply but you say "ActiveSync requires the user to be a
local administrator to sync", and my experience shows this not to be true -
it works just fine in a limited user account.

My problem is that when I switch to my administrator account to, most often,
update a virus checker, ActiveSync also starts up in that account. It then
breaks Outlook (in the limited account - Outlook is not running in the admin
account.)

If what you say is correct, then it is a really poor program, isn't it.
Bordering on evil, in that there is no way to exit it cleanly, or to stop it
running in a given user. Are either of these possible?

Hi,
For the Administrator account, try putting Killsync from
www.pocketpcfaq.com/applications/ in the startup. It will end ActiveSync
and not sync.

Activesync can sync if a user is logged in as just a user (or restricted
user)

You must be an administrator to install activesync as with most programs.

Activesync supports fast user switching in other words if you are logged on
a restricted user and you sync your device, when you switch to the admin
account Activesync will start up and allow the admin user to sync, since you
do not have outlook installed and running Activesync will complain as it
needs outlook to sync with the device (since you already have you device
setup to sync the device is telling outlook to get it items to sync, that is
why activesync is complaining)

Activesync does not support simultaneous synchronization of multiple
devices.
