ActiveSync changes email addresses to "RTF"

I sync my SP5 with 2 PCs both with Outlook.

For no apparent reason the email properties of my contacts will change from
"Let Outlook decide the best sending format" to "Send using Outlook Rich
Text Format".

This happens even though I have not changed anything in the contact's email
address in Outlook on either PC.

The effect is that when I send attachments they are encoded incorrectly and
are not received properly by the person I'm sending them to. When I change
the contact's email properties back to "Let Outlook decide the best sending
format" the attachments are sent properly again.

There doesn't seem to be any predictability about when the properties change
which makes it hard to diagnose or find a workaround.

Does anyone know a setting on Activesync which will prevent altering of
contacts' email properties or a registry tweak?

I can't find any information about it.

Any help most welcome as it's becoming a real problem for me.
TIA

If you see the problem in ActiveSync 4.2beta, you can report it to astell @
microsoft.com (remove the spaces, obviously).
