ActiveSync does not transfer EMails with attachments

I have an IPAQ 4700 and ActiveSync is working perfectly apart from any EMail
in my Inbox with an attachment. If I look at Pocket Outlook as it is
synchronising, I can see the EMails with attachments being transferred, but
then they disappear again.

I was using ActiveSync 3.7.1 but just installed 3.8 to see if it fixed the
problem but it does not.

Have tried Options Storage Store attachments on storage card both on and
off - no difference. Have also tried limiting the size of the attachment
and having no limit - no difference. The attachments are all small Word
docs and the translation is as standard.

Can anyone help?

Hi Maureen,

Have you tried running Detect & Repair feature available under the Help menu
in Outlook to scan the pst file. Additionally, you can also try running the
Scanpst utility to check for any corruption in the PST file (the file that
stores your Outlook data). Search for scanpst.exe on your computer. The
default location of the file is as follows:

* Windows XP, NT and 2000:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT\scanpst.exe

* Windows 95, 98, and Me:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\95\scanpst.exe

Note: C: might need to be replaced with appropriate drive letter.

You will need to run it against the .pst file. If you are unable to locate
the path of the .pst file, do the following:

1. Open Outlook.
2. Click File -> Data File Management
3. This should list all the PST files that are present. Click Open Folder
and you should find the storage path of your *.pst file.

Hi Raj,

Thanks for the advice, but I've tried that and there are no errors on either
scanpst.exe or scanost.exe (I have a laptop and use it with offline
folders). After running those there still is a problem with synchronising
any EMail with attachments. Any EMail with an attachment will not be
transferred and ActiveSync will report x items cannot be synchronised where
x is always equal to the number of Emails with attachments. On clicking
resolve items, I get no errors reported, it just tries to synch again and I
get the same result.

Hi Maureen,

What kind of attachments are these? If they consist of word documents, do
they contain images... etc.

Another way to check if it is affecting attachments of any nature is,
Compose a new message in MS Outlook -> Type a few words -> Save it as draft
and then move it into your Inbox. See if this message gets sync'd
correctly. If it does, Save one of the concerned attachment on the desktop
and include it in this newly created message. Sync again and verify.

I've had the same problem on and off with my RX3700. With AS 3.7 AND 3.8. I
have just got it to work by putting the atachments on the storage card which
I know you have already done.. another time I disabled the synching of
notes. Also I moved all the items out of the Inbox in Outlook and added them
back a bit at a time but the problem keeps reoccuring, I'm sure it will
again

Raj,

I have tried creating a draft EMail in the way you suggested. I also
created a very simple attachment in Word and also one in the Text editor
(both containing only the word 'Test'). The EMail without the attachment
synchronised correctly - the two EMails with the attachments (one with the
Word and one with the Text attachment) did not transfer. Moreover, if I
deleted the attachment from the EMail in my Inbox (without resending the
EMail) and synchronised again, that Email synched correctly.

I'm still seeing the EMails with attachment transfer to the PocketPC but
then disappear again - presumably when ActiveSync gets to the attachment.

Hi Maureen,

Have you tried recreating the partnership? See if it helps ---

1. Disconnect the PPC from the computer.
2. In Activesync -> File -> Delete Partnership.
3. Connect the device and follow the onscreen
instructions to setup a new partnership.

Raj,

Tried that and recreated the partnership, but it is performing exactly the
same as before. No EMails with attachments transfer, I see them appear in
the PPC but then disappear again. If I delete an attachment, the Email
transfers correctly.

Anything else I can try?
