ActiveSync encountered a problem on the desktop.

I have been getting a Sync Error when I try to sync my Xperia X1 using the
Mobile Device Center in Windows XP Home Professional. The message is:
'ActiveSync encountered a problem on the desktop.' There is no error code.

Does anybody have any ideas about how I can fix this error? Very grateful
for any suggestions.
