ActiveSync Errors after August Update

I posted the following message in the Windows Update discussion and then
discovered this group. I see that I am not alone in having sync troubles
after installing the latest WindowsXP security updates. It looks as if the
boys at MS have inadvertently broken something needed to make AS run
properly. Perhaps, if MS support is monitoring this group, they can come up
with a fix to this new problem:

"I have a Treo 700w using ActiveSync to synchronize with Outlook 2003 on my
desktop. Desktop is an HP running WindowsXP and ActiveSync 4.2. Had no
problems with ActiveSync until I installed the latest (August) Windows
updates. Now no sync can be completed -- after long wait while ActiveSync
reports that it is "looking for changes", I receive an error message (no
error code) saying that there has been an error, synchronization has failed,
try again. Also, ActiveSync no longer recognizes my Outlook contacts as data
that can be synced. I have (1) checked that my firewall had appropriate
permissions for ActiveSync components, (2) turned off my firewall, (3) turned
off antivirus software, (4) uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync, (5)
deleted and reinitiated the partnership between my Treo and desktop, and (6)
kicked tires -- no joy!! Anyone else seen this behavior or know of a possible
fix.

Thanks."

Hi,
Have you tried uninstalling Outlook and reinstalling it? In some cases this
fixes the problem you described.

Outlook is working fine and ActiveSync was working without any problems until
the latest Windows updates were installed. Wouldn't want to mess with my
Outlook installation, with risk of losing all my settings, email setup and
data, unless that was absolutely necessary. I'd rather switch to another sync
application first. Do you know if Hotsync or PocketMirror work with the 700w?

Hi,
HotSync only works with Palm OS devices so it won't work with Windows
Mobile. There is a version of PocketMirror for Windows Mobile. Another
alternative is Intellisync.

I have been working with an ActiveSync support tech at MS and my problem was
caused by excessive 0 byte files created by the Palm software which I was
running on my Treo. If you are using a Treo 700w, you should check the
Windows\Temp folder on your device and see if there are many 0 byte files (I
had over 3,000). The following steps solved my problem:
(1) deleted all of the 0 byte files (it took several hours to delete them
all in my case)
(2) eliminated the sync partnership between your Treo and desktop
(3) recreated the sync partnership

I was then able to synchronize all data types as before the problem began.

Palm has an update of the Treo 700w software (from version 1.03 to version
1.10.

Hope this information is helpful.
