ActiveSync Killing Outlook Appointments Again!

Background:

Using Windows XP Pro SP1 (with all updates), Office 2003, and ActiveSync
3.8. I use AS to sync with two WM2003 devices, a Windows Smartphone
(Audiovox SMT5600), and a Pocket PC (IPAQ 2210).

I have hardly ever modified or entered PIM data on either of the mobile
devices. I enter all the data on the computer, and sync it to the portable
devices to take with me.

In AS Options/Rules/Conflict Resolution/Desktop, I previously used the
setting "Always Replace The Item On My Device". Recently, after mentioning a
similar problem I had on this or another forum, someone suggested I change
that to "Leave Items Unresolved", which is how it was set today. I have
NEVER had it set to the third option--"Always Replace The Item On This
Computer".

Problem--

I have written about this before, about how occassionally Outlook Contacts
and Appointments seem to have mysteriously disappeared after an AS session.

It happened again today, although this time I have only noticed missing
appointments. (I haven't really checked though, to see if any contacts are
missing too.) This morning I entered many new appointments into Outlook.
Then I synced with my Smartphone, in order to sync the new appointments
there.

Suddenly, most of the new appointments were missing, not there on either the
SP or the desktop computer. It's going to be a real hassle, to have to enter
all those appointments manually again!

I then used an undelete app, to see if an Outlook.PST file had been deleted
(the prior one, before AS deleted appointments), and could be restored. No
such luck, didn't find one. Any way those deleted appointments could be
restored? Is all trace of them actually gone from the computer? (BTW, in
case someone writes that I should backup my PST files, I do. I don't have
any backups so current they would include the appointments added today
though. (Kind of a hassle to back them up too, as neither Outlook nor AS can
be running when one does it.)

What could have caused the deletion of many appointments, all entered the
same morning, in an AS sync session? I would greatly appreciate if someone
could help with this problem. This time I checked the AS logs in my temp
folder, and I see a place where several appointments on the desktop had been
deleted, although I cannot fathom the reason why. I'll post such log entries
at the bottom of this message, in case they give anyone a clue.

If anyone could help with ideas to restore the lost data, and/or could give
any clue as to why this happened, I would appreciate it.

Would AS 4.0 be less likely to have such problems?

Hi,

The Conflict resolution settings are invoked specifically incase a conflict
arises during sync. That is if you have edited the *SAME* appointment or
data content (Contact, File etc...) on your PPC and the computer. During
synchronization, this action would result as a conflict where Activesync
does not know which copy of appointment needs to be updated on the
device/computer. It will then check for conflict-resolution settings that
you have selected and proceed.

With respect to the lost data, I suggest you first take a look in the
Deleted items folder of Outlook. If the device has deleted the content from
your desktop, then you should find it in there. Any chance you are syncing
with two desktops?

Actually, this time I was lucky, in that I discovered the data loss quick
enough, and did find the lost data in the "Deleted Items" folder. However,
other times I have lost data permanently. (I have it set to "clear deleted
items folder on exit".)

No, I am not syncing to two desktops. Only to two devices (PPC and
Smartphone) (not simultaneously, of course) from one computer.

Any idea what could have caused the problem?

Thanks.
