Activesync Kills Wireless

I have just updated my ppc2003 O2 XDA mini to a WM5.0 O2 Atom.

My mini could sync to my wireless laptop using AS 4.1 without issue.

When I try to sync the Atom via USB it kills my 802.11g WPA connection
(Intel 2200 to Billion 7402vgo).

If I sync via Bluetooth my wireless is not killed.

If I sync via USB with WPA-PSK turned off (unencrypted link) my wireless
is not killed.

If I sync via USB with a physical ethernet connection I maintain network
connectivity.

Once my wireless is killed the laptop needs a reboot to regain stability.

My easiest solution is to sync via Bluetooth, unfortunately Microsoft
have seen fit to disable WMP10 sync via bluetooth - no music transfers,
no license updates.

My second easiest solution is to disable WPA-PSK and run my wireless
link unencrypted. Like yeah, I really want to do this! Also I can't do
this at work.

My third easiest solution is to tether my laptop to a blue wire This
means I can't work at my desk at work, I need to move to another desk.

Doing a google search shows this is a confirmed problem. But nowhere can
I see suggestions that MS might fix this *BUG*. The MS website also
doesn't list any support options for ActiveStink.

Does anyone have suggestions apart from these three choices, or an email
address for the Activesync developers?

Thanks

Getting a new WM5.0 device? $800
MS Removing 802.11 sync? Plain Stupid.

MS is aware of it, but I have no idea what, if anything, they can or will do
about it. I suppose another choice would be to run Exchange Server and sync
via 802.11 from the device, but that might be costly for a home system...

Hi,
Please visit Intel's website and install the latest update for the 2200 card
you have. This should resolve the problem.

Hi!
Unfortunately, the suggestion to install the latest wireless LAN card
drivers did not work (at least not for me). I also have the problem that the
WPA-secured connection between my notebook (Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG card)
running Windows XP Pro SP2 and my wireless router is killed when my windows
mobile 5 device is connected via USB. The computer has to be restarted for a
reliable reconnection (before a restart, the connection is established for
several seconds and then crashes again, reconnects, crashes etc.). It's right
that an open connection without encryption is not killed.
The latest Intel driver does not resolve the problem, nor does it the latest
ActiveSync 4.1 version. Apparently we just have to wait and hope for a bug
fix.

I talked to one of the AS team guys. They've apparently been into it quite
a bit without identifying one particular element on their end as
responsible, although they said that they found several elements where wired
connections, even though over USB like ActiveSync, were favored over those
which were wireless like your built-in WiFi connection. They're still
puzzling over the WPA vs. WEP thing. I hope that one of them will reply in
this thread.

In the mean time, here were the, admittedly fluffy, suggestions for trying
to figure out what on the laptop might be responsible:

Go through "Systray icons" shown in Sytem's Systray or Services running
locally on the Laptop which is exhibiting this kind of issue and try to
locate an app or utility or service which might be responsible for this kind
of behavior. Normally I would look for an app whose description might say
something like "Config free" or "Automatic connection manager" and would
disable it or, if it is a service, then stop it and see if this fixes the
issue or not.

Yep, the Intel drivers don't solve the problem. I've contacted Intel (they
won't take responsibility). I've contacted Sony (Intel told me to contact my
notebook manufacturer) and they won't help. So, Microsoft, let's get this
fixed. I really don't think many home users like myself want to run an
Exchange server or switch to WEP. The easy answer would be to allow AS to
sync wirelessly using my wireless LAN. Can't be that hard to add that
feature since it was used in past versions of AS. Pretty sad...

Please post *very* specific information on what hardware you are using, PC
and access point, what OS, and any network, virus protection, firewall, VPN,
etc. software. Also, are you using WPA-PSK or are you authenticating with
some EAP server and using WPA-TKIP? Please describe the network setup as
thoroughly as you can.

I'm trying to get a contact on the AS team to either join the thread or talk
to you directly. They'll need to be able to go down to the store and buy
exactly what you have to duplicate the problem, though.

I am using a Sony Vaio VGN-A250 with the Intel 2200BG wireless. ZoneAlarm
Security Suite for anti-virus and firewall protection. The problem exists
with or without ZoneAlarm running. I am using a Linksys WRT54GS - Wireless-G
Broadband Router with SpeedBooster V1.0 or 1.1 (not sure). I have the
network in mixed mode, WPA-PSK, MAC Address filtering "on". Nothing fancy or
intricate here.

Thanks. The specific info should be helpful to MS in trying to fix this.
They say that they'll join the thread soon.

If it helps, some more specific information about my hardware / software setup:
Notebook (Toshiba Satellite M50), Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG card, latest
Intel driver (should be 9.0.3). Windows XP Professional SP2 with latest
updates, F-Secure Antivirus 2006, Windows XP firewall enabled. Netgear
DG834GB Wireless router (latest Firmware 2.10.22), MAC address filtering on,
WPA-PSK encryption. Mobile device is HP hx2790 (Windows Mobile 5.0).
ActiveSync 4.1 installed.
Hope these details help to fix the problem.
Regards,
Thomas Pressel
