Activesync syncs "too many" items?

I'm using Activesync 3.8.0 on a WinXP Pro machine, in conjunction with a
completely updated, service-packed Office 2003. My device is a Samsung i730,
which uses Windows Mobile 2003 SE.

In Outlook, I'm configured to fetch mail from an Exchange server
periodically and pull all the mail into my local Personal Folders Inbox.
Under that Inbox, and at the same level in Personal Folders, I have a
variety of folders that I use for archiving messages.

In my sync settings, I don't have ANY of those folders selected. I want only
the Inbox folder to be sync'd with the device and even then I'd prefer it if
any sub-folders under Inbox were NOT sync'd.

Sometimes when I sync, though, Activesync will spin for quite a while and
tell me that it's syncing literally HUNDREDS of items -- which is odd
because I rarely let my Inbox exceed 15-20 items. I'm not sure where all
these items are, but I notice that my device's memory will sometimes take a
HUGE hit. More recently, I've noticed that Activesync will tell me that my
Inbox has "2 unresolved items". I don't know what they are and they won't go
away or prompt me to do anything if manually choose "Resolve Items" myself.

In Activesync... tools->options->Inbox->settings:

None of the items in the folders tree that have a checkbox are checked.
Copy at most 100 lines
Copy messages from the last 10 days
[] Include file attachments is NOT selected.

On the device...

Accounts is set to Outlok E-mail...
Storage options: Store attachments on storage card
Empty deleted items "Immediately"

In Activesync on the device, it's all the defaults. I'm syncing only with my
machine and not with a server.

..... So, any ideas on why Activesync would find HUNDREDS of messages to sync
up, where all those messages actually are, and most importantly, how I
should be configured for my "relatively simple" sync needs?

Hi,
Have you tried removing the option to sync your Inbox, sync and then
disconnect. Then try setting up the inbox sync again.

Yes, I have done that (in part to free up a ton of used space on the
device). When I re-added the Inbox to the sync, it still had hundreds
(actually a couple thousand) of items it felt like it needed to sync.

When it started that, I clicked the STOP button in ActiveSync. With AS still
open, I went into Deleted Items in Outlook 2003 and emptied that folder
(something I rarely do). When I did that, the 2K+ number of "items to sync"
in the AS window updated to just a couple hundred. At that time, there were
only 5 items in my Outlook 2003 Inbox so I'm not sure where the rest came
from... but it did tell me that Deleted Items were trying to sync between
Outlook and the device.

All I really want is that root Inbox folder in Outlook 2003 to sync up...
ignoring any other folder in my Personal Folders.
