ActiveSync takes forever to connect

Handheld model: HP IPAQ RX3115
Handheld OS: Pocket PC 2003 Pro
PC OS: Win2K, SP4
ActiveSync: 3.7.1
Mail/Calendar: Lotus Notes 5.0
3rd Party Conduit: Intellisync 5.01.02

When I initially connect my handheld to my PC, ActiveSync
attempts to connect. Intellisync is not running at all.
The initial connection with ActiveSync each time i
physically connect my handheld take 7 - 10 minutes. Every
time. Even when all files are synchronized. In the
meantime, the ActiceSync box pops up on my screen and sits
there all greyed out (mousing over gives an hourglass)
taking up lots of memory.

Once the initial connection is made, everything works
fine. Synchronization both through ActiveSync and
Intellisync work fine. Why is it taking so very long to
successfully connect?

What sync options do you have selected under Tools -> Options? Do you
have Outlook on your computer at all? Can you try reinstalling
ActiveSync?

Syncing options originally included Images, Favorites, and
Files. Thinking one of these might be the problem, I
removed them all until none of the options were chosen. No
difference. I do have Outlook 2002 installed on my PC (it
came with the IPAQ), but since this is a work computer and
all email and calendar functions are handled through Lotus
Notes, I have not set up any profiles on Outlook. Might
this be the problem?

Thanks for your help.

You can try setting up a profile in Outlook to see if it'll help.

Also, there is (by default) no Images sync option - do you have a
third-party imaging product installed that installed this option?

Yes, I imagine this is something that came with the IPAQ.
I didn't think of it before, but it is probably part of
the HP Image Zone software.

I have created the profile in Outlook, and it has made no
difference. It still takes 6-8 minutes to even see the
little green wheel spinning in the desktop app. Before
that, it's just a grey box that the Task Manager
identifies as "Not Responding".

Other ideas? Could it be arguing with an antivirus or
firewall software for any reason?

Which firewall software are you using? Try disabling it and see if it
helps - it could be that the firewall software is blocking some of the
TCP/IP connections (as ActiveSync uses TCP/IP to communicate with the
Pocket PC).
