ActiveX Ceases to function on Server 2003 (32 Bit) (AMD64 3700)

After either the last update or installation of either the WinFX Runtime/SDK
or the Platform SDK on Server 2003 Small Business Edition SP1, all ActiveX
controls ceased to function. When I looked at the Downloaded Program Files
directory, it said that everything was still installed but none of it
functioned, not even Flash. Internet Explorer does not even show the
Information Bar saying that ActiveX is even required or running. Enhanced
Security Configuration is not an issue, as I have set all ActiveX related
fields to allow or prompt and on the advanced tab, third party controls are
set to run. My Browser Version is 6.0.3790.1830. Is this a problem that could
be caused by not uninstalling the .Net Framework 2.0 Beta before installing
WinFX (I have had VS 2005 installed since August), and if it is, is there a
workaround? Or if it is not a problem caused by WinFX, are there any registry
keys that need to be changed or any COM servers that need to be re-registered
to re-enable ActiveX. By the way, My system is an AMD Athlon 64 3700 running
Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 with Exchange 2003 and Active
Directory. Another problem that has appeared lately is that MMC reports
Internet Explorer Script Errors, could these be related? Thanks in Advance.

This was probably the first issue. Installing anything on a Small Business
Server that has not been tested and certified by Microsoft as functional is
an invitation to disaster -- especially /beta/ software.

All of these.. the .NET Framework 2.0 beta, WinFX, and VS2005 installed on
Small Business Server 2003???

Quite frankly, Mike, other than the noted issues with installing any
'untested' stuff on SBS2003, these are really questions that belong in the
beta forums for these products, not a public forum on Windows Update.

Mike, I have the same problem on Windows XP home edition. Running Office XP
for small business. I cannot figure out if I installed any Beta software
except for maybe Microsofts Spyware remover. If you learn anything about how
to fix your problem, please post here. Thanks ever so much.

Hi,

See if this helps:

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

You may have to reboot your machine afterwards.

Regards,
Torgeir
