ActiveX/JavaScript problem?

Hi

I have been unable to access Windows Update since installing XP SP2. I
continue to get the error message '0x800A01AD' which is not cleared by
following the procedure outlined in the link for this error. I have
registered the xml dlls and downloaded the service pack. IE6 takes an age
to load and will not start pop ups and Windows Explorer takes an age to find
the hard drives and display the contents as does the Explorer dialogue box
to open/save files in any other location than the one it opens at. Recently,
and very briefly both issues were resolved, IE loading and Explorer behaving
as it should, but still no access to Windows Update but after a reboot I was
back to the same problem. I suspect this is an ActiveX issue but I can't
find any way of verifying this.

All suggestions gratefully received!!

Peter

When searching for available updates on the Windows XP update site, you see the
OX800A01AD while looking for available updates
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...cleid=13&ln=en

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=883821
You may receive an error message when you search for available updates on the Windows
Update Web site
"0x800A01AD error code
To resolve this error, register the Wuaueng.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Wuaueng.dll, and then click OK two times. "

Thanks for this, things are a little different but still far from resolved,
IE6 opens in a timely manner and eventually accesses Windows Update but
finally still comes up with the same error. I have followed the
instructions in the two links but still experiencing problems.

Any other directions I should be looking?

Thanks.

Peter

You receive a 0x800A01AD error message while you access the Windows Update Web site
or
To resolve this error, register the Wuaueng.dll file.
Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Wuaueng.dll, and then click OK two times.
you may also need to register the atl.dll
Click Start, click Run, type: REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll

if that doesn't work try the following:-

Click Start, click Run, type: net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok

Repeat the same for the following:

regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll

net.exe start wuauserv

Restart and try Windows Update again

or
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#C...Service_Pack_2
Look for fixdb.bat under "Error 0x800710D9 Unable to read from or write to the
database". Download and run it.

Other reference:-
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;836926
Updates from the Windows Update Web site are not installed and an "Error 0x80070005:
Access is denied" error message is logged to the Windows Update.log file

This error message may occur if you have insufficient permissions to the Windows
Update registry keys. The WindowsUpdate.log file will also read errors 0x80070005 and
0x80080005.

Comments from another user

"Had same error code.
Also tried changing various access rights.
All without success.
Even downloaded the update files individually. But that would give an error on
attempting to copy the file branches.inf.
This lead to the solution.
For whatever reason, the file branches.inf
located in C:\windows\inf was made ReadOnly.
Cleared this ReadOnly flag and the installation of the updates worked smoothly."
