You receive a 0x800A01AD error message while you access the Windows Update Web site
or
To resolve this error, register the Wuaueng.dll file.
Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Wuaueng.dll, and then click OK two times.
you may also need to register the atl.dll
Click Start, click Run, type: REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
if that doesn't work try the following:-
Click Start, click Run, type: net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok
Repeat the same for the following:
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll
regsvr32.exe MSXML3.dll
net.exe start wuauserv
Restart and try Windows Update again

Also tried changing various access rights.
All without success.
Even downloaded the update files individually. But that would give an error on
attempting to copy the file branches.inf.
This lead to the solution.
For whatever reason, the file branches.inf
located in C:\windows\inf was made ReadOnly.
Cleared this ReadOnly flag and the installation of the updates worked smoothly."
