After update KB896688 I can not load anything regarding ActiveX including the
windows update website. When I go to the update site I get the message I
need to install the activex control and I should click the bar that appears
above, but the bar no longer appears.

How can I resolve this.

And I should mention that if I uninstall this update then everything works
fine again.

Hi

We have the same problem but see how to unistall the update. Nothing can be
seen under control panel.

Did you do the instal manually?

I have been working w/MS on this, but so far no help. I am gratefull that
you've narrowed down which update is the one that was causing the problem. I
hadn't even gotten that far with them. When you remove the update can you
install the other updates or do they all download fine, then fail on install?
Do I need to look further for another problem?

I had to use the Spuninst.exe utility located in the
%Windir%\$NTUninstallKB896688-IE6SP1-20051004.130236$\Spuninst folder because
KB896688 messed up the function of my Add/Remove Programs icon. In addition,
the Microsoft Update page was malfunctioning because it was not recognizing
that IE DID have the necessary ActiveX controls necessary for the page to
run. These issues went away after I ran the uninstallation.

BTW, I don't know if this is a common thread for users that had the problem,
but I am running Symantec Corporate antivirus on the server in question and
had Tamper protection running. The tamper protection program intially threw
up errors when I ran the updates. Another server which I updated which
"happened" NOT to have tamper protection on ran the updates without a hitch.

I am afraid to play with the variables to explore these parameters more
fully and will leave it to others with time on their hands and testbeds with
which to play !!!!

Do you happen to be running Hyperion Financial Management software on
these machines? We are running into this problem in my company,
however the problem only appears to be on machines running HFM.

Thanks

Did you reach a final fix that allowed the system to run?
I have the same problem and have tried MS fixes and even restore from backup
tape. Whatever it is is very sneaky.

Novice IE user with short fuse.
