I had to use the Spuninst.exe utility located in the
%Windir%\$NTUninstallKB896688-IE6SP1-20051004.130236$\Spuninst folder because
KB896688 messed up the function of my Add/Remove Programs icon. In addition,
the Microsoft Update page was malfunctioning because it was not recognizing
that IE DID have the necessary ActiveX controls necessary for the page to
run. These issues went away after I ran the uninstallation.
BTW, I don't know if this is a common thread for users that had the problem,
but I am running Symantec Corporate antivirus on the server in question and
had Tamper protection running. The tamper protection program intially threw
up errors when I ran the updates. Another server which I updated which
"happened" NOT to have tamper protection on ran the updates without a hitch.
I am afraid to play with the variables to explore these parameters more
fully and will leave it to others with time on their hands and testbeds with
which to play !!!!
