When I go to Windows update on an XP Pro machine I get the message below.
The problem is that the "Internet Explorer Information Bar" is not
displayed. It is s though the ActiveX system is broken.

Does anyone have nay idea how to fix this?

Many thanks!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The "Internet Explorer Information Bar" is what is not displayed.

The exact error..

Install the ActiveX control required to view the website
The website will not display correctly on your computer without this
control. To install it:
1. Right-click the Internet Explorer Information Bar. It's located just
below the address bar.
2. In the right-click menu, click Install ActiveX Control.
3. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Install.

Note: If the Information Bar doesn't appear, or if you've installed the
control but still can't use the website, take these steps to solve the
problem.

Example: Internet Explorer Information Bar with right-click menu

Please state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3) when posting to
this newsgroup. In this case, also state your IE version.

Has Windows Update website ever worked on this computer? Is Automatic
Updates enabled?

XP SP3. IE7. Automatic update is enabled. Not sure if it is working.

WU worked until I had a marathon virus removal session (guided by an expert
at Safer Networking -
http://forums.spybot.info/showthread...486#post265486).

WU is a casualty and probably something realtively small is needed to fix
it. I just have not tackled this before.

Thanks,

- A

I think you've got more work to do, Andrew.

If the machine-in-question is networked to other machines via a LAN, you
could be dealing with a DNS.Changer infection. If so, you'll have to clean
all networked machines and probably need to reset or reinstall the router.
If you don't, the machine-in-question will be reinfected within seconds of
being connected to the network.

NB: If it's not a networked machine, plugging-in an infected USB key could
reinfect the machine within seconds, too.

That being said, I'd say you're in good hands with pskelley. If the machine
is on a network, you might want to mention this to your handler if you've
not done so already.

Best of luck.
