Hi,

I've just built a test lab which has our 2 x windows 2003 DC's in it. I
want to have a look at Windows 2008 AD so I was wondering is it best for me
to upgrade one of the test DC's to Windows 2008 or create a 3rd Windows 2008
member server and promote it?

Thanks

Hello Whiteford,

I prefer always to install an additional DC when new OS versions are used,
even if inplace upgrades are fully supported from Microsoft. See my blog
about:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archi...r-2008-r2.aspx

Best regards

If you do an inplace upgrade you take along all the service pack and patches
from the prior o/s as well as any other junk. I would strongly recommend
doing a fresh install.

I have an article on upgrading your forest from 2003 to 2008

I have a fresh Windows 2008 member server ready now. I've gone to the Win
2003 DC and run the Win2008 adprep /forestprep and get this error:

[User Action]
If ALL your existing Windows 2000 Active Directory Domain Controllers meet
this
requirement, type C and then press ENTER to continue. Otherwise, type any
other
key and press ENTER to quit.

Forest upgrade has been canceled by user.
[Status/Consequence]
Adprep has been stopped. The forest has not been completely prepared.
[User Action]
Check the log file ADPrep.log in the
C:\WINDOWS\debug\adprep\logs\20100629140709
directory for more information.

Adprep encountered a Win32 error.
Error code: 0x4c7 Error message: The operation was canceled by the user..

Hello Whiteford,

Hello did you make sure to use the correct combination?

"type C and then press ENTER to continue. Otherwise, type any other key
and press ENTER to quit."

Did you type "C and ENTER" as described in the first part??? Otherwise i
can't understand "Forest upgrade has been canceled by user."

Best regards

I'm with Meinolf on this one. I avoid "upgrades" if at all possible....
