Add hardware wizard keeps appearing

Subject says it all. Every time I boot or reboot Vista it tries to
install drivers for the ATA serial controller.When I let it, Vista
becomes un-usable even in safe mode. It BSOD's and will not boot
regardless of what I try, except for try last known good
configuration. I can not find drivers to manually update, and I've
hidden the windows update notification; yet this wizard still appears,
even if I tell it to never remind me again. Any body know of any fix
for this problem? Thanks

If that does not work, try disabling the Shell hardware detecton service
under Services (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services)

Do you have the option to disable the device in the Device Manager? That
might be an easy way to stop it.

I'd be interested to know if this works, considering the OP had problems
with the ATA serial controller under Vista, not LPT ports under XP!
