I note you do not mention applying System Restore. Vista will create restore
points going back some way all though the older points drop off when the
feature is full. If you can find a restore point at a date when you know the
computer was running properly, this might well solve the problem.
But before you start, please disable any setting in any antivirus program,
such as Norton, whereby such program seeks to protect itself against an
outside attacker. If you don’t take this step, you may find that System
Restore fails to work properly.
