On my XP Pro computer, since installing the latest 6 security updates, it
takes 9 minutes for the add and remove programs panel to populate. It
populates normally in safe mode. Any ideas will be appreciated.

I uninstalled the 6 updates that were installed on April 12. In Add/Remove
progs window, the install date was not shown, even though the programs were
listed. The dates are shown in the Windows Update install history and are
shown as successful. After removing, the Add/Remove window still does not
populate without delay. I then re-installed the updates. There was no change
to the Add/Remove after the re-install. Progs are listed, no install dates
shown, long delay in window populating. Since the removal of the updates did
not fix the problem (long delay in populating Add/Remove window), I suspect
that the problem might not be with WU, but something else. I have no idea
where to go from here. Thanks for reading this.

The problem was being caused by an external hard disc that could not be
accessed. Removal of the drive restored Add/Remove programs to normal
operation.
