Adding 2008 DC to 2003 Environment

Hello,

I recently upgraded my forest/domain functional roles to 2003 and then added
a 2008 member server. I added the AD DS role and then ran dcpromo.
Everything looks good until I get to the options screen. The only one
available is Global Catalog. I want this to be a secondary DNS server for
me, but installing DNS with AD is grayed out. When looking at the dcpromo
log, it shows that DNS is not hosted on this domain, returning a 9501 error
when querying for NS and SRV records. Nslookup sees everything just fine and
dcdiag doesn't give any errors when run on the 2003 DC. Does anyone have
any ideas on how to proceed? I can't seem to pinpoint the issue.

Dirk,
have you followed instructions in
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../cc733027.aspx and ensured that
forest/domain prep operations completed successfully?

Hello dirk,
Are you saying you want to dcpromo a 2008 box? If so have you extended you
schema via adprep?

Prepare a 2003/2003 forest

Yes, I went through all that and it was successful. The domain and forest
functional levels are 2003. All things are pointing towards DNS having
issues, but nothing looks out of the ordinary. Can I just
uninstall/reinstall DNS if it's the only DNS server on the domain?

Hello dirk,

If the adprep commands are run succesfully, just promote it to DC. You can
also isntall DNS role later on. During the promotion make sure that the 2008's
NIC is only pointing to your existing DC/DNS server. Also i would suggest
to use AD integrated zones. When AD is replicated install the DNS role, nothing
more to when using AD integrated zones, it will replicate DNS zones in roundabout
15 minutes. If DNS is fully replicated cahnge the DNS settings on the NIC,
preferred itself and secondary the other existing DNS server.

Best regards

Hi
1-If you want a secondary DNS server you don't have (isn't mandatory) to
have that w2k8 as a DC. You can have secondary DNS servers without having
the DC role. Of course to get the advantage of security, replication, etc...
You need a DC to have DNSAI .

2-Before introducing Windows 2008 in your domain as a DC, you nee to upgrade
the schema and the domain. Before doing that, check MS documentation about
it. This isn't something that you can do without some planning in a
production environment. things can get really bad for you...

I hope that the information above helps you.
Have a Nice day.
