Adding a first Windows 2008 R2 64 bit DC in to Windows 2003

Dear all,

I have Parent domain and a child domain as follow;

company.local
production.company.local

Domain functional level: Windows 2000 native.
Forest functional level: Windows 2000 native.

Parent domain has 2 X Windows 2003 DC's
Child domain has 13 X Windows 2003 DC's due to the geographical locations we
have.

Everything is working fine and touch wood I have no issues apart from odd
replication due to VPN failures.

My aim is to prepare the Domain for Exchange 2010 which requires Windows
2008 Domain. I have purchased new HW for the domain controller and my first
step would be to upgrade the domain to Windows 2008 before extending the
schema Exchange 2010.

1.) Can I just install an additional Server Win 2008 and promote it to DC
and this process will extend the schema for from Windows 2003 domain to
Windows 2008 domain?

2.) Will my Win 2003 DC's still operate as normal and replicate to Win 2008
domain.

3.) Can I raise the domain functional level to 2008 or will that cause
issues with users login in and Exchange 2003 organization.

Thank you for your help on this.

Lion.

Hello ,

"My aim is to prepare the Domain for Exchange 2010 which requires Windows
2008 Domain" this isn't complete correct:

"Active Directory must be at Windows Server 2003 forest functionality mode
or higher." From http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../aa996719.aspx

http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archi...directory.aspx

1. before you can add a Windows server 2008 R2 you have to upgrade the schema
with adprep command on the schema master which exist in the forest root domain
so in your case in company.local, after /forestprep control replication and
if all DCs are replicated the change then go on in all domains with /domainprep
and /rodcprep, control replication between the DCs after each step and then
you can promote the first Windows server 2008 R2 machine to DC.

Also check my blog about:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/mweber/archi...r-2008-r2.aspx

2. replication will occur as before, keep in mind that the firewall by default
is enabled in Windows server 2008 and higher OS

3. you can raise the functional level at that moment when no Windows server
2003 DC exist anymore, all DCs must be Windows server 2008 before you can
raise the functional levels.

Some more info:

Thanks for this.
1.) I have raised the Forest and domain functionality mode to Windows 2003
2.) I have also executed the adprep /forestprep using the adprep.exe from a
32 Bit Windows 2008 Server (not the R2). This was performed on Windows 2003
R2 Schema owner.

My questions are;

Do I now run adprep.exe /forestprep 32 bit from a Windows 2008 R2 ( above
was just 2008 version that I ran) CD or do I perform adprep.exe /domainprep

I guess in another word is there any difference between Windows 2008 and
Windows 2008 R2 Schema? I guess there is but.....

If I do upgrade the schema using Windows 2008 R2 and install a Windows 2008
R2 DC can it co-exist with Windows 2003?

run adprep (adprep32) from the 08R2 DVD

Yes, Schema v44 for 2008, and v47 for R2

Hello ,

you have to run the complete adprep32 commands not only /forestprep.

Also there is a new schema version you can check it with "schupgr" or "dsquery
* cn=schema,cn=configuration,dc=domainname,dc=local -scope base -attr objectVersion"
without the quotes in a command prompt, 2008=44 and 2008R2=47

They can coexist without any problem.

Best regards
