adding memory under VISTA

Got an Acer lap that came pre-installed with VISTA HOME BASIC and 512Mb RAM,
which clearly not enough to run the Redmond hogware. I am going to install
TWO GIGs of mem.

Really lame dept: this laptop basically FAILS windows test, as score is
flatline 2.0, so why did Acer even load VISTA on it in first place? Strange.

1) will this upgrade require me to contact MS, or will VISTA simply accept it
without a hassle?

2) did NOT get VISTA dvd with the laptop; how do I handle this should I ever
need to reinstall it?
Can I get/buy a dvd for my own piece of mind? I know there is supposed to be
recovery features, but MS has never been known as a flawless source of
programming code; bug fixes are their specialty.

Not all that impressed with VISTA but had to do it to keep pace with current
periphs, etc. Slow, not intuitive, but grudgingly made the move to VISTA.

A. No reason to contact MSFT after installing more RAM....easy upgrade!

A. Your computer manufacturer (Acer), is your contact for obtaining Vista recovery media.

If the computer can physically accept the RAM, Vista should not give you any
problems.

Again, Acer can answer these questions as they are the ones that supply the
recovery function for the computer they manufacture and sell. Also, what is
stopping you from purchasing a copy of Vista?

It's a learning curve, for sure. But you will see that Vista is a lot more
"snappy" once you upgrade the RAM to what Vista really needs. What you have
now is a "barely" minimum configuration.

hi.
you should get in touch with acer because a recover CD should be with
it and the problem you will have acer formats the HD as fat32 the extra
memory would help it would be no disadvantage get a decent laptop my
acer lasted a year and others i know wasn't much longer but acer should
supply you with a system recover CD or the upgrade CD to vista original
is xp installed.

It can be easily converted to NTFS. Open up a command line window, and
type 'convert /?' for instructions.

But *don't* do it until you have a backup.
