Adding Search Providers

I am running IE7 on Windows XP with service pack 2. Everytime I try to add a
search provider, I get an "error on page" message at the bottom. Error detail
states that " Object doesn't support this property or method." I have also
tried to add my own provider following the directions given on the page and
was given the following message "Unable to add search provider. The Create
Your Own tool requires Internet Explorer. [438]"
How do I fix this? Is there another way to add search providers and change
the default search engine?

You may have a horked (dirty; bad; flawed) install of IE7. I suggest that
you...

1. Uninstall IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6) EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/kbase2.html [Only use the Command
%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe if you cannot uninstall via Add/Remove
Programs!]

2a. Uninstall all toolbars and third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds).

2b. Disable all Norton Add-ons, if applicable.

3. Reinstall IE7 EXACTLY per
http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install <= Steps #1-8, #10 &
#11; take note of #12, then STOP!

NB: Use http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/default.mspx as the
installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.

Or Direct Download link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...0-081805b2f90b

Tip: Save the installer to your desktop, do not Run it.

4. IMMEDIATELY go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any
critical updates offered. If a "Root Certificates" update is listed in the
Optional category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of
IE7's additional security.

Did I need to have IE6 installed on the computer before installing IE7??? It
was running a much earlier version (whatever version was running about 6
years ago). Also had a problem with the customizing "run once" page when I
first downloaded IE7 and was given the error message at the bottom of the
page when I tried to make selections.

If you're running WinXP SP2, you had IE6 installed (by default) before you
installed IE7. Please try my suggestions.

You don't need to do all that uninstall/reinstall. If you are
comforatable with the registry there is a much easier way.
The issue you have run into is caused by shdocvw.dll being registered
in IE7.
To fix it:

1. Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
2. Navigate to the following location: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ TypeLib \
{EAB22AC0-30C1-11CF-A7EB-0000C05BAE0B} \ 1.1 \ 0 \ win32
3. Double-click (default) and set C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieframe.dll as
its data
4. Quit Registry Editor.

Hope this helps.

Awesome! I had the same problem with IE8. But now it works great.

In fact I tried to reinstall IE8 several times - didn't help. I think that
this version of IE8 doesn't work properly with my system. Anyway I don't know
why. It's also not possible for me to see these new features when I open a
new tab, I have several other problems.

However, I can't give up IE8 because it's a lot better than IE7.

I have XP SP3, IE8 Beta. Matthias

Thank you for posting this. This fixed the issue right away. I spent a good 2
hours trying everything. Good looking out.
