Hello All,

I was wondering if there is a way to add a WIFI router into my SBS 2k3
environment to allow visitor to access just the internet?

tia,

Jerry

I would advise you do not set it up inside your SBS 2003 environment
especially if it's primary use is for visitors or clients in the office. How
are you going to handle DHCP if it is setup inside your SBS network? I
hooked my up externally of my DSL line using an external static IP and have
the WIFI handle DHCP outside my SBS network.

If you have a (2 NIC + router) setup for SBS 2003, it can be done fairly
easily with a cheap wireless router connected to a port on your present
router. With a single NIC setup, it would require a more capable wireless
router to separate your SBS LAN from your Vistors LAN. As Allen said, you
don't want your visitors on your SBS LAN.

"How are you going to handle DHCP if it is setup inside your SBS network?"

This is why I posted to the question to get some ideas from others. I
realize that DHCP is an issue as well as using a Static IP but the Static IP
comes with an additional monthly charge that I was hoping to get around.

If I were to use a IP address from SBS that is excluded from DHCP Pool I
could assign it to a router and have the router do dhcp clients with a
different scope but how to hanlde logon? I was thinking trying to set the
router up as PPOE to login to the SBS domain.

put your WiFi router or access point between your Internet connection (DSL
or cable modem or existing router), and the external NIC of your two NIC
SBS. This will allow you to have the router/wireless access point to
provide DHCP addresses to the wireless clients without disrupting the SBS,
and keeping the visitors outside your SBS network.

Hi Charlie,

Thank you for your reply. I do have a dual NIC system but I also have the MX
record pointed to my external NIC with my static IP provided by ISP.

Will this be a problem if I plug the single output from the DSL modem into
a Router or AP?

TIA

Jerry

Hi Merv,

Thank you for your reply. I have a dual NIC setup on my server. Will I have
trouble if I point my MX record to my static IP address from my ISP?

You'll probably want to buy a cheap wireless router and connect it between
your DSL modem and your External NIC on the SBS. Then assign the external
NIC a static IP address in same subnet as the LAN side of the router. On
the WAN side of the router, assign it your Static IP address from your ISP.
Set up the wireless part of the router for WPA security and have it do DHCP
for your visitors. Manually forward all required ports to your external NIC
(25, 4125, 443, etc.). Then re-run CEICW (but don't let it do UPNP setup of
router). The MX record should not be affected since hte static WAN IP
address is not changing (only hardware is changing).

Two Nics, a static IP address, ISA, router
(diagram works with or without ISA onthe SBS server)

If you have two public IPs, this is easy. If you don't, then it isn't (and
at that point I wouldn't bother trying, as you'll be exposing your internal
network to the wireless guests).

-------------------------------------------------

*ISP's modem*
|
|-----Ethernet switch-----|
| |
(123.123.123.1) (123.123.123.2)
*RouterA* *RouterB*
| |
|----LANA----| |----LANB----|
