Adding Windows 2003 R2 x64 domain controller

I have a Windows 2003 (R1) x32 domain controller and i'm trying to add a
secondary dc server that runs Windows 2003 R2 x64. When I run the AD wizard
it says that the domain schema is not prepared, and that I should run
addprep in the current domain controller using the utility in the R2 CD2
installation disk.

Is this operation safe? If not, what should I backup to prevent AD
corruption?
Thanks a lot!

Hello Gaspar,

Yes, it is safe, never had problems, either it runs or you get an error message.

For a backup you have the need at least for the system state of the DC.

Yeah, since you're running R2, it asks for a Schema Upgrade. You'll
prepare the schema for this. It for most of the time is a safe
operation. I haven't seen issues with Schema Updates coming from Microsoft.

As a backup, you'd need your system state backup. Note that a failed
Schema Upgrade might involve a forest recovery (which isn't a big deal
if you have a one-DC-one-domain-forest scenario).

Cheers,
Florian
