Admin Only, other problems after auto updates installed on Windows

I installed updates on my home PC running Windows ME a few days ago from my
auto-update. Since then, I can't view any of my documents - when I click
"Start", "Documents", "My Documents" the window is empty when it comes up,
except for a tiny square with a dot in it in the upper left corner. It says
there are objects in it, and I can view recent documents without a problem,
so it appears they are still there.

When I try to go to Control Panel, I get a message saying "An error has
occurred in the script on this page, Line 107, Char 21, Error: 'gfolder' is
null or not an object, Code 0, URL: file://c:\Windows\Web\controlp.htt".

Also, when I try to go to Windows Update now, I get the message "To install
items from Windows Update, you must be logged on as an administrator or a
member of the Administrators group. If your computer is connected to a
network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this
procedure".

I've tried logging off as "default" and logging in as "Administrator" with
no luck. I looked at some of they keys in Regedit and found a strange folder
that said "Curent Version" (note the way it was mis-spelled - that wasn't my
typo) above another folder that says "Current Version".

I'm thinking I got some type of virus, but when I go to Trend Micro I can't
run the virus scan because I can't look at my files and choose the "C:"
directory to scan.

Something's rotten in Denmark, and I have a homeowner board meeting to
prepare for. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

roll it back to a restore point.

I think you should post in the microsoft.public.security.homeusers group,
which will suggest actions you can't complete before your meeting.

Download the file OLEfix.zip available here (it is a registry file
that origin from MS Support, and it has fixed the ActiveX problem
for several people, getting this problem after installing KB896688):

http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip

Extract it and double click the contained OLEfix.reg file. Click Yes
on the dialog box that asks you if you are sure to add the information
in OLEfix.reg to the registry.

See also the new released KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909738
which is referred to *now* in the revised Security Bulletin 05-052.

Thanks for the info - I'll give this a try. I spent a couple hours last
night poking around trying to find a thread with a similar problem but didn't
have much luck. I'll post again with the results.

Try the fix that Ottmar alluded to.

Otherwise, most Win9x users who've encountered this problem have found that
it's being caused by hijackware:

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

OK, I can't get to the file OLEfix.reg once I extract it, because of the
original problem that I can't see any of my files - that's part of the
frustrating problem - I can't see or get to anything.

I also tried going to the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909889/en-us
that you recommended and tried cutting and pasting the text onto my desktop.
When I double clicked the KB909889.reg file and clicked "Yes" to add the
information to the registry, it says the specified file is not a registry
script and that I can only import registry files.

Any other ideas? This really stinks...

Thanks!

Laurie

I'm a W98 user, and I fixed my problem with Q896688 by restoring an older
version of Mshtml.dll.
