I bought a new Gateway with Vista pre-installed on a250G HD. I added the SATA
drive that had been in my Dell which ran XP. The Dell had been "named"
HOME-01, the gateway is HOME-02. when I try to open documents from the xp
drive I receive message I don't have adminstrator permiisons to open files. I
am sole user/administrator, but can't take ownership of pics and docs on "G"
drive. Do I need to use a third party migration program or is there a way to
gain rights to the files?

Hey there Johncee,

the reason is because the credentials of the owner for the xp machine are
different than the vista machine. Even if you created the same username and
password on each machine, they're still machine specfic (ie- qualified as
%MachineName%\User)

Here's how to take ownership of the directories.

Right click on the directory you want to own.
Click on the security tab.
Click on the Advanced button.
Click on the Owner tab.
Click and highlight your userID.
Check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" checkbox.
Click Apply.

You'll probably be prompted a couple of times from the User Account Control,
but after that, you should be good to go.

Let me know if this works!

Best Regards,

Will
