I have Windows 98se on my computer. I downloaded and installed IE6. I went to
Windows Update and could search for updates. Windows Update worked as it
should. It showed I had a "cumulative security update for IE6 service pack 1
(KB905915). I downloaded and installed it and went back to Windows Update and
received a message "Administrators Only" with a message below about how to
run as a local administrator in Win XP and server 2003 and below that Win
2000. I can't find any way to fix it for Win 98se. If I uninstall IE6 then
reinstall it Windows Update works fine until I install the security update
(KB905915). Any help would be appreciated!

ActiveX controls may not load as expected in Internet Explorer due to
defense in depth changes introduced in cumulative security update 896688
(MS05-052)
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=909889

The fix detailed in 909889 involving the Registry and OLE32.DLL should
resolve your problem and is available at

- http://patch-info.de/IE/Downloads/OLEfix.zip, and

- http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/kb896688_fix.zip (a small VB app that
checks the 4 values and offers a repair option if any of them are
incorrect).

Pleae let us know if you can fix this problem with the OLEfix.zip noted
below. If not..........you will probably have to uninstall the update.

Let us know.

Thanks,

Marcus

OT for jm2591: Marcus is one of a very few Win98 users for whom the cited
fix didn't work.
