*Right* click an Internet Explorer shortcut and choose 'Run as
administrator '
Enter a password if one is used then click the Continue button.
If one is not used then just click the Continue button.
Once IE is open, copy and paste the below link into the address field.
Make sure that the URL is *not* blue by clicking a blank spot in the
address field and then press Enter:
http://www.update.microsoft.com/micr.../default.aspx?
IE should now show:
User your Start menu to check for updates
Did it ? If not, click the Start orb
Type in
cmd
Under Programs, *right* click on cmd.exe
Enter a password if one is used then click the Continue button.
If one is not used then just click the Continue button.
At the prompt, type in the following commands pressing Enter after
*each* one. *NOTE the spaces* or the commands will not work
net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
net start cryptsvc
exit
Now see if the system can access Microsoft Update by using the Start
Menu Windows Update shortcut. (Start orb > All Programs > Windows Update
*IF* User Account Control has been disabled then suggest you reenable
it. Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control on.
