Running XP64 -

I always have auto updates off and once a month, manually connect and update
my system. This month I got a generic "windows update has had an error" with
a subsequent abort. After trying various things I finally emailed MS Tech
Support. On her advice, I deleted all the dll's etc and reinstalled WU
files. Now, when I access WU, I get the "Administrator's only" error.

I AM the Admin and I have no policies set. I even tried vreating a new admin
account - same issue.

I'm still waiting to hear from MSTS again but she usually emails me a
suggestion once a week.

If I enable auto updates however, they WILL download and install but I
prefer doing it manually.

Followed the steps outlined in the KB and all policies and settings are as
the suggest.

Any idea what the problem might be? Basically WU does NOT recognize that I
am the Admin or that I am a member of the Admin group.

Thanx,

Vic

Try logging on *as* the Administrator before attempting to install updates
"manually."

Are you running WinXP SP2 or SP3? Have you upgraded to IE7? [These are
just questions, not suggestions/recommendations.]

How long have you been having this problem? Did you recently have occasion
to reinstall Windows for any reason?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running
in the background when you installed SP3 and/or IE7, as the case may be?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

XP64

IE7

Built new system in January with XP64 - WU worked in January

WU failed February upate - around the 3rd

ESET NOD32 AV current

Only other anti spyware is WinPatrol.

wouldn't have a Norton or McAfee app on my system

No firewall - I'm behind two routers

Everything worked fine after the initial install of XP64 and all apps.

I've added no apps since then. First problem was a simple WU has encountered
an error message with no further explanation. At the suggestion of MS tech
support rep WU files were uninstalled and downloaded fresh files and
installed. Since then been getting the Admin only message not the WU has
encountered an error message.

Was NOD32 running in the background when you installed SP2 and/or SP3 and/or
IE7?

Have you tried Method 2 here (ignore the title)? =>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144

Otherwise, stick with MS tech support on this.

SP2/3 not valid for XP64 bit systems

NOD32 was not running when IE7 installed

I'll wait and see what MSTS comes up with.

Thanx for trying!

Vic

Of course, sorry about that.

Other things to consider:

Was the machine ever connected to the internet before NOD32 was installed,
other than to get NOD32 fully updated?

Was the machine ever connected to the internet via the modem (i.e., not via
a router) before NOD32 was installed & fully updated and without the Windows
Firewall enabled?

Are all other machines on the network fully patched at Windows Update?

Setup system - connected to internet through two routers to get initial
Window Updates. Then installed NOD32 and any other updates.

Never connected ahead of router for any reason.

All other systems ( 3 Xp32 and 1Vista ) all current updates.

hi vic...just letting you know you're not the only one having this problem. 3
days ago i could update my pc...now, like you, i'm told i need to be an
administrator (which i am) although my pc is set to download updates
automatically and ask me if i want to install them (which it still does)...i
still like to go see if there are any additional updates i may need.
