Administrators only! preventing scan

Windows 98SE. How can I scan for updates when I get this message. I have a
wireless LAN in my home and this problem just recently occurred.

Try setting the MTU of the router to lower than 1500. Keep adjusting the
MTU downward until you reach the right transmission speed. Consult the
router's Manual for info on how to access this.

The LAN can't be the problem. I have another workstation on the same LAN
without the problem. I now find many posts with the same problem including
ActiveX controls not working, and they seem to point to a bad update KB896688.
