My 450MHZ HP Pavilion with 96MB RAM is running windows 98SE with IE6SP1. I
did a nondestructive reinstall due to increasing BSODs and seems to be
working fine now except windows update refuses to scan stating there is a
local policy in place preventing this. I checked the registry for such a
policy at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\Explorer (explorer subkey didn't even exist) and additionally at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Policies\Explorer.

In both locations there was no entry with the name "NoWindowsUpdate" (in
fact only one NoDriveTypeAutorun entry in HKCU key) so
I created them and set value to "0" but still no joy.
I cleared my Temp|Cookies|History|Temporary Internet Files and still no joy.
The activex cache only has sun java in it
In desperation mode now I found wucrtupd.inf and right clicked to
install...no joy.
I did a find for 'wu*;iu*' and regsvr32 any DLLs found ...no joy
Now the error changed from Administrators Only to simply Access Denied
Any help will be appreciated since I'm out of ideas
