ADMT-source and target domain

In the ADMT User account migration wizard, when asked to type the names of
the target and source domain i get:
Please input different domains for the source and taget (domain =
contoso.com)
i am transferring users from source : contoso.com to target: contoso.local

OK i found that this is not possible due to the fact ADMT is using the
netbios name to transfer the accounts.
Is there a way to change the domain name on the target (contoso.local) and
then after migrating the users rename it back ?
Is renaming safe enough?

Hello polilop,

2003 and higher OS when functional level is st to 2003 or higher allows
you to do a domain rename.
