We may be splitting hairs on this but I regard this as a Windows Update
question and issue and therefore I believe it is being posted in the correct forum. It's a Windows Update function that does not work after all. If you're telling me you know its an IE7 problem I would be grateful if you could explain in more detail what the problem is and point me at the solution. By mentioning IE7 I'm just following good practice in describing my environment accurately. -- Bernard "PA Bear" wrote: > Those with IE7-specific questions or comments are asked to post to and seek > support in this newsgroup: microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general > > On the web: > http://www.microsoft.com/communities...plorer.general > > In your newsreader: > news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...plorer.general > -- > ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) > MS MVP-Windows (IE, OE, Security, Shell/User) > AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net > DTS-L http://dts-l.org/ > > Bernard wrote: > > I'm running XP Pro with all updates applied and IE7. 1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? Most of the previous couple of replies just passed me by, anyway I just tried
PA Bear's suggestion to start IE without add-ons and the result was interesting but not what I expected. I started it from the right click on the icon as you suggested. IE came up with a page saying it was running without add-ons (fair enough), and a yellow bar at the top saying that add-ons were disabled. A right mouse click on this yellow bar gives me two options (About add-ons and More information). Both of these just put me into a help page. Below the yellow bar in the body of the page there is a hot spot for 'check for the latest Windows updates' - if I click on this I get a Welcome to Microsoft Update page with 3 bullet points saying the following 1. Right-click the Internet Explorer Information Bar. It's located just below the address bar. 2. In the right-click menu, click Install ActiveX Control. 3. In the Security Warning dialog box, click Install. However if I right click on the yellow bar I do not get the option to install the ActiveX Control, I just get the same two options as before. On this page there is a further line which says "Note: If the Information Bar doesn't appear, or if you've installed the control but still can't use the website, take these steps to solve the problem. " with the latter phrase being a hotspot - I followed this and it took me to two possible solutions including signing on as an adminsitrator (whiich I already was) and telling me to install the ActiveX control, which I could not! So I seem to have stumbled at the first hurdle - I'll take a look at the blogs in your Point 1 next. -- Bernard "PA Bear" wrote: > > No, I don't think I won't UN-install IEEE. Thanks Frank for the suggestion about malware - I don't think I have a
problem with this - I've got Norton AV installed and up to date with regular scans, plus ZoneAlarm pro and I also run Lavasoft Ad-Aware - but you never know. Anyway it seems that Point 2 from PA Bear has resolved the problem (just for the benefit of others let me say I did try disabling all the Add-ons in PA Bear's Point 1, but that had no effect) - resetting the IE settings seems to have cured it - not 100% sure because you don't seem to get a very strong signal back from IE when you check the Advanced Options box and it accepts it - I'm assuming 'done' at the bottom means it accepted it - together with the fact that I do not get a message saying it could not do it! Furthermore a few other little glitches like not being able to see Forum posts in the right-hand pane (I had to double click on each post to view it in a separate window) seem to have been cured as well by the reset. So thanks PA Bear, I'll keep my fingers crossed that it has gone and Frank, I'll also look further into the malware points you raised to see if there is anything lurking around. -- Bernard "Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM" wrote: > "Bernard" <> wrote in message > news:67198E6C-96BF-4AC9-8950-... > > Most of the previous couple of replies just passed me by, anyway I just > > tried > > PA Bear's suggestion to start IE without add-ons and the result was > > interesting but not what I expected. I'm going to have to take a while to read through the items you mention. You
may well be right about NAV and/or ZA running at the time I ran the update that installed IE7 - almost certainly they were. Now that it seems to be working do you think there is likely to be any further problems due to other registry keys being missing? I don't really want to have to uninstall it (and NAV, ZA etc) and then redo it all unless I really have to. -- Bernard "PA Bear" wrote: > If RIES fixed the problem, it was most likely caused by NAV and/or ZA > (and/or Ad-Aware Pro's Ad-Watch) running in the background when IE7 was > installed. > > Required reading IMHO before installing IE7: > > Sandi's Installation Tips <= FOLLOW THESE TIPS TO THE LETTER! > http://www.ie-vista.com/known_issues.html#pre-install > > [And I strongly recommend using > http://www.microsoft.com/windows/dow.../getitnow.mspx as the > installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.
