Advice, Vista retail or OEM?

I'm running an XP Pro box and I'd like to try Vista without jeopardizing my
XP stuff. I plan on dual booting Vista Ultimate with XP. I can't decide
between;
Vista Ultimate Upgrade - $239
Vista Ultimate full version OEM - $190 (I'll buy an after market Vista
book).

IMHO, Vista Ultimate full retail - $339 is unnecessary?

I plan to build a new machine before Christmas. New MB, RAM. CPU, and
Graphics card. At that time I'll delete the XP partition and go Vista with
no crutches <VBG>.

Any holes in my plan?

Legally, you can't install OEM on one machine and then move that same OEM
license to another machine (even if you take the OS off the original
machine).
Now, there probably will be posters who will tell you how to get around
that, or that MS will be more tolerant than their official OEM policy says
they should be.
Still, at $190 a pop, you could get TWO oem versions of vista almost for the
price of one upgrade.

Full retail version then you have far more flexibility in use.

Bob do you mean the $339 full retail or the $190 full retail OEM? I think I
can do everything with the OEM version that I cab do with the $339 version -
can't I? I've read and understand the EULA but I understand MS is very
tolerant with hobbyist system builders especially since the new system
contains may components of the original system install.

You've answered your own question. Kind of. If -you- think MS is going to be
tolerant of your moving an OEM copy of Vista from one PC to another, and I'd
have to assume that would be the case considering all the new hw you intend
to use to build your new system, even if you're using the same case, power
supply, and hard drives, then have at it.

If MS is not as tolerant as you suspect, then you'd only be losing $41 when
you buy your second copy of OEM Vista to install on your new PC. And if
MS -is- as tolerant as you hope, then you will have saved $149. Feel lucky?
LOL.

I'm not ragging on you... I don't know how to answer your question other
than in the manner above. As you stated, you've read the EULA. Will MS "look
the other way" with OEM copies of Vista when hobbyists are involved? No
clue. Maybe. Maybe not.

In either case... good luck.

Lang

Two holes.

The first is that an OEM copy cannot be moved once it's installed on one
PC - the license lives or dies with that PC.

The second is that Microsoft owes you ZERO support when you buy an OEM copy,
the support is the responsibility of the OEM seller. I doubt they'll be of
much help given past history on such things, and this will start a cycle of
the OEM telling you to call Microsoft and Microsoft telling you to call the
OEM.

It's my understanding that if a company sells you the sealed OEM version
then YOU become the OEM, and the company that sold it to you has no
responsibility to give you support.

Actually, it can be moved. MS would rather you didn't but, technically,
it can be easily done.

BFD. You can get more real support from this group and Google.

You may have to phone activate. Tell them you upgraded the machine.

I don't need MS support and, despite what the OEM EULA says, it *is*
possible to install the OEM copy to an upgraded box. Sheesh!
