I just installed SP1 on my OEM Windows Vista Home Premium HP A1654n. After
completing the installation, Aero is gone and is nolonger listed in the
Windows Color and Appearance dialog. It was working perfectly minutes ago..

If you remove the SP does it return ?

Not heard of that before. My guess would be that for some reason SP1 thought
it was updating a Basic system, without Aero by design. My try at it would
be to use System Restore to remove SP1, and download again. (The Update site
is pretty busy, and maybe it just errored in what you need)
Run WINVER to see what it says.

Just a guess:

Are your graphics drivers still in place? Aero Glass won't work with generic
VGA drivers.

Good luck.

Return address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Before going to the extreme of doing a restore or uninstallation. Try a
reboot, it may simply be down to the system being heavily loaded and the
system turned it off to improve performance.

Thanks for your efforts everyone, it isn't solved yet though.
I tried rebooting, and I do have my Nvidia 7500LE graphics card drivers
installed and running. I don't really care that much about Aero, but I have a
question:
At some point in the past, I installed another style for Vista, so in my
colour scheme list, there is "Windows Vista Basic" listed twice, once for the
regular style and once for the other style I installed. Could this be causing
the problem?
Maybe I will just uninstall the Service Pack, it seems to do more harm than
good.
Starting to think about switching to Ubuntu or Leopard, Microsoft is
starting to **** me off badly, every release seems to be a disaster..

Update: I have uninstalled SP1, and the Aero option is still gone from the
list : (
Ideas?

Go to Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Performance Information and Tools
and 'Update my score'.

If you had 3rd party modifications to system files that could very well
indeed cause something like this, never the less try the score thing first.

I noticed some new Nvidia driver updates slipped in between the update
process on my daughter's Vista machine. I had read about problems with them
so I chose not to install them. Any chane you installed these driver updates
inadvertantly which were not a part of SP1? If you did maybe you can restore
the old drivers & see if you get it back. I have AERO disabled on her
computer because it gives me a black screen with VNC & I am not able to
monitor her activities or access her desktop remotely with it enabled.

I did update the score which didn't change anything.

Also, to remove some ambiguity, my 2 screens are running with 32bit colour
