After April 2014, will there be any easy way to retrieve all xp
updates to that date? I would hope that MS would leave the update site
so that old updates are still offered, but I don't know. I guess I'd
better buy a used xp system and get it updated before then.

Online search for: WSUS Offline.

Rather than have your own WSUS server with workstations getting their
Windows Updates from there, you use WSUS Offline to retrieve the updates
and store locally for use later when you want to do a fresh install of
the OS or apps and then apply all those updates (but with your local
updater, not the one from Microsoft or from your company's WSUS server).

Rather than pollute WSUS Offline's own install path (which I configure
for C:\WSUS\wsusoffline), I set it to save the updates to another path
(C:\WSUS\wsusupdates). I can then later toss the whole wsusupdates
folder onto, say, a USB thumb drive, to carry over to a host where I
just did a fresh install of the OS or apps and then run the
UpdateInstaller.exe program.

Because I still have some "legacy" products, I have WSUS Offline grab
and locally store the updates for: Windows XP, Office 2003. I also have
it retrieve and locally store updates for Office 2010, Windows 7, etc.
That lets me do the updates even on a computer that doesn't yet have
network access or the mobo's chipset drivers haven't been installed to
have a working NIC.
