After downloading Updates

I havent downloaded any updates for a little while, i tried it last week, and
had about 35 updates, after downloading, the PC restarted and all seemed
fins, after bring up the strat menu and icons, everything dissappeared, and
now i cannot get them back, even after restarting a number of times, i can
load up the task manager but this runs very few programs. Can anyway help
with a way to fix this.
