After downloading updates they will not install

Anyone with an answer as to what happened is greatly appreciated. Have never
had a problem with this before. It seemed to have appeared all of a sudden.

Same problem here. Had to clean reinstall Windows 2000 Professional and can
no longer successfully install updates. I have exhaustively searched the web
for help with this issue and have tried a million things: Re-registed dlls,
removed MU and WU objects, checked services.msc to make sure everything
needed was running, cleared cookies, temorary internet files, history, added
appropriate microsoft sites to 'trusted sites list', checked local host file
for hijacks and more. Would really appreciate help in resolving this.

Smores...I found the answer on my own. Seems if you use Spybot and you
disable "WINotify.dll" in the startup/processes menu this will cause the
updates from downloadin. It had been reported that this dll file was a virus.
WRONG I re-enabled it and the updates installed as normal. My solution
anyway. Thanks for the response. J
