I installed 1/2 the updates on the 14th (no hardware ones) on the 16th TODAY
I installed all the office 2003 updates and two hardware updates one was the
VIA Storage - IDE Channel update now my system no longer boots it just
flashes somthing like stop 0x00000007b 0xf7db2524, 0xc0000034.

i have booted to xp repair console and did a checkdisk but think if i could
remove this via update i would be fixed.

any suggestions?

I'm currently having the same problem on two laptops and one desktop that
were just updated via the MS update site. Now they just keep rebooting over
and over with a quick flash of a blue screen. Not a happy camper this
moring. I also see on other forums that there are others with the same
problem -- all after this latest update.

I have this problem now on my Dell XPS M170 laptop. I had to F8 to a previous
known configuration to get into my PC. I don't think my XPS uses Via
hardware, so something is seriously amiss with the update system.

I found a fix.

DELETE ViPrt.sys from the \system32\drivers\ directory.

I can't believe this made it through the WHQL process!

ok more information, on two other machines Compaq D530 SSF machines both
crash rebooted to the safe mode, last known good configureation screen un
reboot. I picked "last known good configuration" and both are now fine. On my
Dell Insprion 9100 choosing "last known good configuration" just gets me a
slighly different stop message.

on my laptop in c:\windows\inf

the file viafir2k.inf is dated 03/31/03, on the updated compaqs its 08/23/01
the file viafri2k.PNF is dated 09/21/04 on the updated compaqs its 02/09/07

in c:\windows\system32\drivers\ the viPrt.sys is the same on both systems
dated 06/28/06

I have dell complete care and have only been on the phone for about a hr on
hold so far... blaw

Same thing here... except when I rebooted with "last known good config"; I
get a DLL error... "IOCTL_SetPort Could Not Be Found". I click ok and system
boots fine. I'm going to try deleting ViPrt.sys as suggested and see what
happens.

Just got off the phone with MS. Of course they did not know of this problem
but I have seen it all over other forums.

I do believe this has to do with the via driver. Why this driver is showing
up on my intel based chipsets is beyond me.

Just an FYI. What ever this update did I cannot even do a rescue and
recovery from my IBM laptops. Just sits at 0%.

Currently doing a recovery from the XP cd's (I've got a buch of PC to fix
this morning)

First did a "chkdsk /p" once completed ran "chkdsk /r". Still running
through this process.

Just did an MS update on an intel based chipset PC. It is telling me in the
update section about a via driver. (WHY??????) Did not install it and
installed the rest of the updates -- it works -- so I do have two functioning
PC out of six running in this part of office.

If chkdsk /r works I'll let you know...

I just got off the phone with DELL ONE CARE, their first suggestion was
reformat the unit and the problem would go away... lol... but after some
details about the issue in depth they had there service people take 3 laptops
and one out of the three no longer boot at all. There suggestion is if you
have a dell laptop is NOT to get ANY windows harware updates till they can
figure this out.

They gave me a case number and a call back status, that they will call me
back when they have a solution.
