When I use Windows Update after installing Service Pack 2, all the updates
listed are for those using SP1.

What's going on?

Be explicit in stating your version/edition of Windows. We could assume you
have XP --- or you may have Win2000.

Q2: Did you do a restore of your system to an earlier state? eg, backup
from an old backup set?
or if on XP, used System Restore? or if on XP, did you do a "Repair
Install"?

If on XP, go to Start menu> RUN> type WINVER <enter>

copy all info displayed & copy back here.

Finally, did the service pack update finish all OK & did you Restart the
system as prompted??

Sorry, my error! Thanks for your quick response.

I am using Windows XP Professional with SP 2 fully installed. The
installation of SP 2 when very well and I restarted successfully.

I have not done a restore of any kind, from a backup set, system restore, etc.

From winver:

Microsoft Windows Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)

Howdy Robin,

Temporarily turn off Automatic Updates.
Then empty out (flush) the temp files folder.

Review the Service Pack log C:\Windows\svcpack.log for entry that may
indicate failure.

I'm going to quote Allen H at Microsoft (his write-up is handy):
Rename the SoftwareDistribution directory.
Click Start >Run
Type "Services.msc" (w/o quotes)
Press OK

Find "Automatic Update"
Stop the service.

Next, rename the "SoftwareDistribution" directory to "SDOLD". The directory
is located in the c:\Windows ( or C:\WINNT ) directory
(C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution)

Now, restart the Automatic Update service
Click Start >Run
Type "Services.msc" (w/o quotes)
Press OK
Find "Automatic Update"
Start the service.

Clearing the browser's cache
1. Click Tools > Internet Options
2. In the "Temporary Internet Files" section, click "Delete Cookies"
3. Click "Delete Files" click "Delete all offline content" click OK
4. In the "History" section, click "Clear History".
5. Click "OK".

Did all as you suggested. Now when trying to update I get the following:

" [Error number: 0x80070424]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:
For self-help options:

Windows Update Response Center

Windows Update Troubleshooter

Windows Update Newsgroups
For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues) "

Help! Thanks!

You ought to follow the link to Windows Update Troubleshooter. Then do a
lookup / search for that Error.

Is this a stand-alone pc, or, is this in a network setup? is it directly
connected to the internet?

Maurice,

When I search for the error with the troubleshooter, it comes back with:

"Sorry, no results were found that match the criteria you entered"

I made it broad, only putting in the error number and searching under
Windows XP with All Categories.

Also, I noticed that now when I run services.msc, Automatic Update is no
longer listed. Thoughts? Is that what's causing the error now? How do I
reinstate this service?

I am in a small home network, connected only to one other PC. I have a
dialup connection to the internet, which is shared with the other PC, but
not working properly.

For error 0x80070424, yes, most likely.

> How do I reinstate this service?

Going back to an earlier System Restore point is maybe an option.

If, not, you can try this:

Run this command line (from a command prompt of from Start/Run, it
installs the AutoUpdate service (line will wrap in the newsreader!):

%SystemRoot%\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall
132 %SystemRoot%\inf\au.inf

(it must be a space between DefaultInstall and 132)

If it asks for your OS CD-ROM to get some files, just point it to the
folder %windir%\System32 (%windir% is typically C:\Windows).

Then run the following commands:

regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll
regsvr32.exe wuapi.dll
regsvr32.exe wups.dll
regsvr32.exe wucltui.dll

Then start regedit.exe and locate the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\wuauserv

If you find a DeleteFlag value there, delete the DeleteFlag value.

Do a reboot.

After the reboot, check if you can start and stop the Automatic
Updates service successfully from services.msc

The missing Automatic Updates service might be the work of a worm or
something similar (it could be from some spyware or parasite as well).

To try to find what has caused this:

Run a cleanup tool, e.g. Stinger.exe from McAfee, it removes 30+
virus/worms in one sweep.

McAfee AVERT Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

and this one:

On Line Virus Scan

For the Spyware and Parasites part, you will need to run other tools:

The Parasite Fight Quick Fix Protocol
