Now when I go to Updates I'll get the message "Searching for latest
version...." and then everything stops. One thing I've noticed is that
Automatic Updates is not fully installed on my machine. I have even
resinstalled SP2 to no avail, Please help.Thankyou

Give the process at Windows Update plenty of time. Have lots of patience.
Did you wait at least 15 to 20 minutes?
If you are on dial-up internet service, give it even more time.

Minimize (reduce) the number of open user apps & startup utilities before
going to Windows Update.
Logoff & restart Windows after going to Windows Update website.

I tried this but it clearly doesn't work. I think the problem is in a
different direction. Once update starts checking for the latest version
everything seems to stop so that maybe Automatic Updates is not fully
installed.

Try registering the following:

Click Start, select Run and type (pressing enter after each one and wait for the
success message):

net.exe stop wuauserv
Press Ok

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 msxml3.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 atl.dll

net.exe start wuauserv
