I have same problem. Workaround for now is to boot into
safe mode and use system restore to revert to your system
configuration before SP2 was installed. Haven't gotten
SP2 to work on my PC yet.

You, of course, disconnected from the Net, unchecked everything you can in
MSCONFIG, ran spyware removal programs such as Spybot and AdAware, removed
all peripherals like your printer, external modem, camera, etc., disabled
your AV, firewall, eliminated cookies and Internet files, including offline
on ALL your browsers, did a clean up/disk check and defrag before attempting
the install, right?

If not, try it that way.

No, didn't uncheck all services and turn off my Zonealarm
firewall but will try it that way. Interestingly, my
add/remove programs shows SP2 as still being installed
even though I restored to SP1. I tried uninstalling it
and it totally screwed Windows - had to restore again.
Anyway, a MS tech told me to try the uncheck all services
in MSConfig and try to reinstall and I will do that
tonight. -BP

Im having the same problem as all of you, though mines started before SP2.
Mines started after udating with the four following updates:
KB 839645
kb 841873
kb 840315
kb842773
Seeem to be getting it once a week, machine starts to sloow down realbad and
preceeded by BSOD. reboot and it hangs at xp load screen. can load it in
safe mode but not normal. However have found that if i uninstall keyboard in
safe mode and just let xp use a standard ms 102 key keyboard mchine wil
amazingly boot up and work fine for a week then does it again, now monday
playing up again today, fixed by the way described above, everything seems
back to normal. this is so annoying installed above updates 3 times and still
the same prob, installed them one at a time before xp2, that was the 3rd
time. and the same result fails to boot. this is so annoying
